| | | Individal page | | | | Badford, Henry, 26 Nov 1901, aged 32, Collier, Fall of roof. At face, while filling rubbish, a "pounce" occurred, and a stone fell from the roof upon him, causing death the same evening. When bringing out a tram of rubbish, and walking behind the horse and tram, a fall occurred, killing him | | | | Individal page | | | | Carter, Thomas George, 23 Feb 1924, 7.30 p.m., 7th hour of shift, aged 43, Stoker, Deceased came by a terrible death. A Lancashire boiler (one of a battery of nine) had to be damped down for the week-end. The boiler was isolated from the steam range, and the feed water was shut off. Presently it was noticed that the water level in the boiler was too high, and it was decided to run some off, through the blow-off valve. This valve was under the floor plates in front of the boilers, and the water from it ran first into the ash road, and then into a culvert. A stoker removed the plates, and standing on a tram of ashes, tried to open the valve by means of a key. He did not succeed, and was advised to leave it alone until the boiler had cooled down. However, he got another key and standing in front of the valve outlet, opened it. The hot water scalded him to death. The arrangement was bad. The pipe should have led into a special culvert. It should be said that the valve could have been operated from the ordinary floor level of the boilers. The stoker was an experienced man, and it can only be supposed he was obsessed with the one idea of getting the valve opened | | | | Individal page | | | | Cook, Thomas S. M., 17 Oct 1906, aged 28, Hoistman, Whilst adjusting a valve of a surface hoist, the false bottom tilted out violently and struck him on the head | | | | Individal page | | | | Davies, Stephen, Oct 1925, Repairer [More information ...] | | | | Individal page | | CMHRC | | Davies, Stephen, 05 Oct 1925, aged 58, Repairer, Fall came as they were standing timber as a large amount of small rubbish fell — suffocated [More information ...] | | | | Individal page | | | | Duncan, Gwilym, 31 Mar 1914, aged 39, Haulier, Fall of roof at a curve on horse haulage road. In going around a curve with his horse and an empty tram the tram left the rails and pulled out some timber, causing a fall of roof | | | | Individal page | | | | Dunn, Patrick, 18 Aug 1908, aged 23, Assistant Repairer, While riding in an empty tram which was attached to another containing 9 ft. timber, one of the pieces slipped and came in contact with an "arm" of a pair of timbers fixed in the roadway. As the "journey" advanced, the piece of timber was driven backwards with great force against Dunn, killing him instantaneously | | | | Individal page | | | | Dunn, Robert, 04 Dec 1906, (accident: 03 Dec 1906), aged 24, Collier, While walking out along an engine plane at the end of his shift, he was severely injured in a manhole which he had entered to take refuge from a train of nine trams running wild in consequence of the breaking of a haulage rope. The trams tumbled at the manhole. He died next day. | | | | Individal page | | | | Evans, Evan, 18 Aug 1924, (accident: 17 Aug 1924, 2.30 a.m., 4th hour of shift), aged 37, Repairer, He and others were doubling timber on the main road at a place where it showed signs of squeeze. Suddenly a very heavy fall took place, discharging three pairs of timber. He was pinned to the side, and 4 hours elapsed before he could be got clear. He died next day from his injuries | | | | Individal page | | | | Evans, Moses, 27 Oct 1914, (accident: 21 Oct 1914), aged 64, Labourer, Fall of roof at face. A "bell" stone fell from between the props and so injured him that he died six days later | | | | Individal page | | | | Francis, John, 08 Oct 1909, aged 40, Roadman, While laying a crossing from a set of rails to another roadway, he complained of being unwell, and died before he was conveyed out to the surface. At the inquest a doctor who had made a post-mortem examination stated that death was due to a rupture of the heart due to an overstrain | | | | Individal page | | | | Furlong, Stephen, 05 Sep 1912, (accident: 10 Jun 1912), aged 62, Surface Labourer, He was injured between two trams ; the injuries were slight, but he died as a result on 5th September, 1912 | | | | Individal page | | | | Hinton, Charles, 13 May 1901, aged 33, Haulier, While riding on the "gun" his head came in contact with the roof, and he was crushed between the roof and the coal on the tram. J., 25 Nov 1910, aged 16, Assistant Collier, Fall of roof on road near face while a collier was barring loose stone down. Another man was injured by the fall | | | | Individal page | | | | Jones, David, 05 Sep 1911, aged 36, Repairer, Fall of roof on road from unseen slip while repairing | | | | Individal page | | | | Jones, George, 21 Jan 1924, (accident: 17 Jan 1924, 12.0 p.m., 6th hour of shift), aged 18, Haulier, His horse-drawn tram, loaded with rubbish, had tumbled over. After it had been righted, he was cleaning some rubbish from around the front wheels, when the horse bolted forward, and he was crushed between the tram and side. No one saw the accident | | | | Individal page | | | | Peart, James, 17 Jun 1907, aged 28, Sinker, He was killed by a water tank descending unexpectedly upon him.
