Thinking the roof was good, he appears to have knocked out a pair of flats in order to move the rails forward, and having done so he intended to reset them. He was however mistaken, as the fall occurred in the shape of a bell with smooth top and caught him under it | | | | | Individal page | | | | Bevan, Richard, 14 Feb 1899, aged 25, Collier, Fall of roof from slants at his working face in front of a heading, in consequence of insufficient timbering | | | | | Individal page | | | | Blewitt, Charles, 22 Sep 1909, (accident: 17 Jul 1909), aged 39, Collier, Septic pneumonia appears from the medical evidence to have supervened upon apparently a very slight injury to his knee through knocking it against a tram which he was pushing. He died September 22nd, 1909 | | | | | Individal page | | | | Brace, William, 24 Sep 1909, (accident: 24 Aug 1909), aged 36, Foreman Haulier, Leg fractured by the lash of the haulage rope when starting from a station where additional trams were added to the journey on its way to the shaft. It did not seem serious at first, but there was a fracture which was not externally noticeable, and blood poisoning resulting, the leg was amputated. He died from blood poisoning on September 24th | | | Report | Memorial | Individal page | | | | Brain, Henry, 01 Mar 1927, aged 26, Labourer, Explosion, firedamp, propagated by coal dust, ignition caused by either safety lamp or of stones falling on stones, Killed by an explosion of firedamp [More information ...] | | | | Individal page | | | | Bromley, William George, 31 May 1913, aged 15, Collier Boy, Fall of roof in an airway. It bumped into a full tram of coal which stood on the road causing it to run wild and against the door deceased was in charge of. The door was smashed and the boy's skull fractured. The timber drawer was entirely and seriously to blame. (Mechanical haulage) | | | | | Individal page | | | | Harris, John, 08 Aug 1892, aged 33, Sinker, An explosion of firedamp | | | | | Individal page | | | | Hescott, J., 09 Sep 1904, aged 22, Haulier, When walking in front of his horse and trams he appears to have stumbled and been run over ; the road was good and there was plenty of height | | | Report | Memorial | Individal page | | | | Hill, Sidney, 01 Mar 1927, aged 36, Repairer, Explosion, firedamp, propagated by coal dust, ignition caused by either safety lamp or of stones falling on stones, Killed by an explosion of firedamp [More information ...] | | Report | Memorial | Individal page | | | | Hobbs, John Henry, 01 Mar 1927, aged 45, Labourer, Explosion, firedamp, propagated by coal dust, ignition caused by either safety lamp or of stones falling on stones, Killed by an explosion of firedamp [More information ...] | | | | Individal page | | | | Hodges, Alfred, 02 Nov 1905, aged 23, Timberman's Helper, He was engaged repairing on the Main East Level with his brother, who was a timberman, and was cutting back the side in order to make room to set a pair of timbers, when a fall from the side occurred killing him instantly | | | | | Individal page | | | | Hopkins, David, 04 Jan 1895, aged 28, Collier, While in the act of examining the roof (having stripped off the top part of a face slip of coal) it broke over the prop supporting it and fell on him, fracturing his spine between the shoulder also his right arm | | | | | Individal page | | | | James, E. L., 21 Feb 1911, aged 26, Collier, Fall of roof at working face | | | | | Individal page | | | | James, Evan, 16 Mar 1898, (accident: 15 Mar 1898), aged 41, Collier, Fall of roof in No. 2 Dip Heading where he was ripping top injured his back. He died on the following day | | | Report | Memorial | Individal page | | | | Jenkins, Llewellyn, 01 Mar 1927, aged 29, Repairer, Explosion, firedamp, propagated by coal dust, ignition caused by either safety lamp or of stones falling on stones, Killed by an explosion of firedamp [More information ...] | | | | Individal page | | | | Jenkins, Thomas, 14 Dec 1897, aged 34, Timberman, When with others cutting out timber to enlarge a level the timber gave way unexpectedly and let down about eight tram loads of rubbish. One of the timbers fell across his neck and suffocated him before he could be released. It apparently occurred through misjudging the stability of the timbers adjoining the one he was immediately upon and which he looked to for security | | | | | Individal page | | | | Jones, Edwin, 20 Nov 1908, (accident: Jun 1908), aged 41, Collier, This is the case of a death having apparently been hastened by an alleged strain, when putting up timber, acting on a previously diseased organ. The alleged strain occurred, according to the evidence given at the inquest, some time in June, and death took place on the 20th November. He worked more or less irregularly after the supposed strain, but was not laid up at all. According to the medical evidence, as a result of a post-mortem, he died directly of heart trouble. It is one of those cases which are very doubtful as to whether they should be considered an accident under the Mines Act, probably it should not, but it seems to have some claim towards it, hence I have included it | | | | | Individal page | | | | Jones, Isaac, 10 Dec 1907, 4.15 a.m., 10th hour of shift, aged 65, Lamp Carrier, On his way to the pit carrying some lamps he suddenly fell on a level and roomy road. There seems some doubt as to whether he got giddy, or slipped, or stumbled. He seems from the result of a post-mortem to have been suffering from pneumonia at the time and to have been in a very bad state of health. He was seen by a doctor the same day and complained of pains which might have been due to the pneumonia. The shock of falling probably brought things to a crisis and accelerated death a little, but the result of the postmortem showed that he would probably have died very shortly in any case. It scarcely seems a case to be returned as a mining accident ; at the same time I do not like to say that it is not comprised | | | | | Individal page | | | | Jones, Rees, 12 Apr 1907, 9.15 a.m., 3rd hour of shift, aged 24, Collier, Fall of roof at the face of a Barry work in the Big Vein, N.W. District. The stone, a large one, 3 or 4 feet thick, fell suddenly from slips which were previously invisible. The place was fairly well timbered | | | | | Individal page | | | | Jones, Thomas John, 06 Nov 1896, aged 19, Collier, While filling a tram at the working face a large stone fell from the roof killing him instantly and injuring another collier named Bull. The place was well timbered [More information ...] | | | Report | Memorial | Individal page | | | | Jones, William, 01 Mar 1927, aged 30, Collier, Explosion, firedamp, propagated by coal dust, ignition caused by either safety lamp or of stones falling on stones, Killed by an explosion of firedamp [More information ...] | | | | Individal page | | | | Kerton, Thomas, 25 Nov 1907, (accident: 19 Sep 1907, 2.30 p.m., 8th hour of shift), aged 41, Collier, In lifting a lump of coal on to a tram in his working place he appears to have knocked his forehead against a broken flat or crown tree and although he worked a little afterwards, it swelled at the time and inflammation of the tissues resulted followed by suppuration. According to medical evidence he died from the effects of the blow on the 25th November | | | | | Individal page | | | | Langley, John, 26 Jul 1906, aged 46, Master Haulier, When in the act of shackling or coupling up trams for the journey with his head between the trams, some others were let run against them, resulting in his head being crushed. He appears to have heard the trams coming, but to have misjudged their distance | | | Report | Memorial | Individal page | | | | Lee, Charles George, 01 Mar 1927, aged 21, Labourer, Explosion, firedamp, propagated by coal dust, ignition caused by either safety lamp or of stones falling on stones, Killed by an explosion of firedamp [More information ...] | | | | Individal page | | | | Lewis, Gwilym, 25 Jul 1905, aged 24, Rider, In consequence of his omitting to close the stop-block at the top of an inclined portion of the engine plane after taking a full journey from the bank parting, a tram of rubbish ran wild and crushed him | | | Report | Memorial | Individal page | | | | Lewis, Thomas, 01 Mar 1927, aged 70, Engineman, Explosion, firedamp, propagated by coal dust, ignition caused by either safety lamp or of stones falling on stones, Killed by an explosion of firedamp [More information ...] | | | | Individal page | | | | Mason, Boaz Henry, 17 May 1896, aged 24, Collier, Fall of roof at the face in Nottingham long wall. The place appeared to be fairly well timbered | | | Report | Memorial | Individal page | | | | Mason, Edwin George, 01 Mar 1927, aged 33, Labourer, Explosion, firedamp, propagated by coal dust, ignition caused by either safety lamp or of stones falling on stones, Killed by an explosion of firedamp [More information ...] | | Report | Memorial | Individal page | | | | Mathews, Herbert, 01 Mar 1927, aged 29, Collier, Explosion, firedamp, propagated by coal dust, ignition caused by either safety lamp or of stones falling on stones, Killed by an explosion of firedamp [More information ...] | | Report | Memorial | Individal page | | | | Mathews, Trevor, 01 Mar 1927, aged 28, Collier, Explosion, firedamp, propagated by coal dust, ignition caused by either safety lamp or of stones falling on stones, Killed by an explosion of firedamp [More information ...] | | Report | Memorial | Individal page | | | | Mathews, William, 01 Mar 1927, aged 52, Overman, Explosion, firedamp, propagated by coal dust, ignition caused by either safety lamp or of stones falling on stones, Killed by an explosion of firedamp [More information ...] | | Report | Memorial | Individal page | | | | Mathlin, Walter John, 01 Mar 1927, aged 33, Repairer, Explosion, firedamp, propagated by coal dust, ignition caused by either safety lamp or of stones falling on stones, Killed by an explosion of firedamp [More information ...] | | Report | Memorial | Individal page | | | | Medland, Arthur John, 01 Mar 1927, aged 18, Assistant Collier, Explosion, firedamp, propagated by coal dust, ignition caused by either safety lamp or of stones falling on stones, Killed by an explosion of firedamp [More information ...] | | | | Individal page | | | | Meyrick, John, 10 Mar 1895, (accident: 09 Mar 1895), aged 42, Collier, While passing to the upper end of his working stall a piece of coal burst off the face and struck him on his right side forcing him against a prop fracturing his ribs and causing them to penetrate his left lung. He died on the following day | | | Report | Memorial | Individal page | | | | Miles, Edward Coleston John, 01 Mar 1927, aged 36, Collier, Explosion, firedamp, propagated by coal dust, ignition caused by either safety lamp or of stones falling on stones, Killed by an explosion of firedamp [More information ...] | | Report | Memorial | Individal page | | | | Monaghan, Richard, 01 Mar 1927, aged 21, Ripper, Explosion, firedamp, propagated by coal dust, ignition caused by either safety lamp or of stones falling on stones, Killed by an explosion of firedamp [More information ...] | | Report | Memorial | Individal page | | | | Monaghan, Thomas Charles, 01 Mar 1927, aged 28, Collier, Explosion, firedamp, propagated by coal dust, ignition caused by either safety lamp or of stones falling on stones, Killed by an explosion of firedamp [More information ...] | | | | Individal page | | | | Morgan, John, 06 Jul 1901, aged 65, Repairer, John Morgan, 65, repairer, died suddenly underground from heart failure on the 6th July, at Ebbw Vale Marine Colliery. He was on his way in to work when he slipped and fell ; an attempt was made to prove that death resulted from the fall, but in view of the doctor's opinion, I do not consider it should be comprised [fatality reported during the year but not classified as a reportable accident] | | | | | Individal page | | | | Morgan, Thomas, 17 Mar 1908, aged 24, Haulier, Fall of side in road while passing with his journey. It seems to have discharged two sprags which were against it | | | | | Individal page | | | | Morgan, William, 16 Apr 1895, (accident: 08 Feb 1895), aged 31, Roadman, Some roof having fallen adjoining where he and another timberman were engaged repairing, a stone rolled down over the timber and injured him. Consumption supervened and he died on the 16th of April 1895 | | | | | Individal page | | | | Morgan, William John, 31 Dec 1903, aged 16, Collier's Boy, A heavy stone fell from the roof, in a "Barry work," on to his foot and knocked him into a sitting position on the floor. His back apparently struck a post (against which he was found sitting with only his foot under the stone) resulting in serious injury to the spine, and from the result of which he died the same day | | | | | Individal page | | | | Morris, Stephen C., 06 Oct 1909, aged 16, Assistant Collier, He and his butty (or collier-in-charge), who was slightly injured, were holing under a lump of coal which was overhanging, and which, apparently, had one sprag set against it, but which was quite insufficient. The lad's death and the man's injuries were clearly due to recklessness | | | Report | Memorial | Individal page | | | | Morris, Thomas John, 01 Mar 1927, aged 39, Haulier, Explosion, firedamp, propagated by coal dust, ignition caused by either safety lamp or of stones falling on stones, Killed by an explosion of firedamp [More information ...] | | Report | Memorial | Individal page | | | | Morris, Thomas John, 01 Mar 1927, aged 26, Collier, Explosion, firedamp, propagated by coal dust, ignition caused by either safety lamp or of stones falling on stones, Killed by an explosion of firedamp [More information ...] | | | | Individal page | | | | Morris, William T., 12 Dec 1908, aged 22, Collier, Fall of coal from the face as he was lying down under it holing. The rib had been partially cut, which is not desirable before holing is completed. The coal is said to have appeared strong, and there were two sprags set. It is the old story : "Sprags were set" ; but they were not sufficient if even well set. So long as men and officials are satisfied with the fact that sprags are set against the face, within 6 feet or the maximum distance allowed by the rules, without considering the question from the point of sufficiency in case the unexpected happens, these fatalities will occur. The necessary position for the sprags for securing the place efficiently is too frequently not considered, or is not understood by the men, and not enforced by the officials | | | Report | Memorial | Individal page | | | | Nation, Richard, 01 Mar 1927, aged 38, Haulier, Explosion, firedamp, propagated by coal dust, ignition caused by either safety lamp or of stones falling on stones, Killed by an explosion of firedamp [More information ...] | | | | Individal page | | | | Nicholls, Thomas, 17 Oct 1906, aged 27, Collier, Fall of coal from the "face" while he was throwing back coal in his working place. Two sprags are alleged to have been set against it, but apparently one had been knocked out, and the coal came off from a sooty grime | | | | | Individal page | | | | Norton, Walter, 19 Jun 1913, (accident: 18 Jun 1913), aged 31, Shackler, He was caught by a runaway journey of empty trams, which ran into the parting owing to the breaking of a shackle higher up. He was severely injured and died the following day | | | | | Individal page | | | | Owen, John, 29 Oct 1907, (accident: 09 Nov 1906), aged 77, Ostler, He appears to have been kicked in the small of the back by a horse in the stable on the surface in the early morning, and was unable to work after a few days. He died on the 29th October, 1907, death being apparently accelerated by the blow. He was, however, a great age | | | | | Individal page | | | | Owens, Thomas J., 20 Oct 1905, aged 13, Collier, Fall of a "bell" shaped stone from the roof of a "Barry" or "Long-wall" face secured by props and very indifferent cap-pieces | | | | | Individal page | | | | Padfield, John Henry, 09 Mar 1905, aged 15, Collier, Fall of coal and clod at the working face, which came away from an unseen slip | | | Report | Memorial | Individal page | | | | Penny, William Henry, 01 Mar 1927, aged 22, Labourer, Explosion, firedamp, propagated by coal dust, ignition caused by either safety lamp or of stones falling on stones, Killed by an explosion of firedamp [More information ...] | | | | Individal page | | | | Perkins, Ivor, 10 Mar 1924, 9.30 a.m., 3rd hour of shift, aged 23, Haulier, He was caught by a fall of about 18 tons of loose ground, which came from the roof and partly from the sides, as he was walking on a horse haulage road. He was extricated in about 40 minutes, but was found dead. The fall came from a low bridge of roof, and three pairs of timbers, with the laggings above, were discharged by the fall. A sudden side squeeze is presumed to have caused the fall. Electric safety lamp used | | | Report | Memorial | Individal page | | | | Pester, Robert, 01 Mar 1927, aged 39, Haulier, Explosion, firedamp, propagated by coal dust, ignition caused by either safety lamp or of stones falling on stones, Killed by an explosion of firedamp [More information ...] | | | | Individal page | | | | Phillips, John, 08 Mar 1905, aged 15, Collier, When carrying pick-points or mandrils to the sharpening shop he fell and one of the points pierced his side, inflicting fatal injuries | | | | | Individal page | | | | Phillips, Kinsey, 17 Sep 1907, aged 43, Labourer, Died from blood-poisoning upon a slight bruise on his leg alleged to have been the result of stumbling over a roller when walking out from work. His state of health had much more to do with the case than the bruise, which was very slight and without any abrasion of the skin | | | Report | Memorial | Individal page | | | | Pickford, William Charles, 01 Mar 1927, aged 26, Assistant Collier, Explosion, firedamp, propagated by coal dust, ignition caused by either safety lamp or of stones falling on stones, Killed by an explosion of firedamp [More information ...] | | | | Individal page | | | | Powell, Charles, 18 Apr 1900, aged 21, Collier, When, with others, walking into work, he pulled a disused ventilation door, which was standing at the side of the road, over on himself, and was fatally crushed. He evidently mistook it for a door in use, and intended to shut it after him | | | | | Individal page | | | | Powell, Seth, 09 May 1907, 11.30 p.m., 5th hour of shift, aged 36, Repairer, He was working in Klondyke endless rope incline, Old Coal Seam, as a journey of 16 empty trams was being let down to be filled. It was attached to the rope at both ends by short chains ; the chain on the upper side becoming detached allowed the trams to run down until they over-ran the chain at the lower side and were checked by it. The two first trams were thus thrown across the rails and crushed him against the side | | | | | Individal page | | | | Powell, William, 15 Jun 1924, (accident: 14 Jun 1924, 4.0 a.m., 5th hour of shift), aged 31, Haulier, Powell was standing on the empty road, outside a manhole, where the rider was taking refuge, on a passbye, as a journey of eight full trams was being lowered in to the passbye. The first tram fouled the points, and the derailed trams, taking the wrong road, crushed Powell against the side, causing such injuries that he died on the following day. Electric safety lamp used | | | | | Individal page | | | | Price, Bert, 16 Oct 1907, 3.40 p.m., 9th hour of shift, aged 28, Assistant Blocklayer, Fall of roof on a barry road in the Big Vein Seam, where he was assisting to lay the curve rails leading up into the face. Clod which had not been taken down as usual to make height fell from a face slip, which his butty should have noticed, he himself not being an experienced man. The collier in charge of the place seems to blame in the matter more or less | | | | | Individal page | | | | Price, Daniel, 11 Jun 1900, aged 39, Collier, Fall of roof where he and others were making height in a cross heading. The bed of stone which they were ripping down fell over a considerable area, the props having been removed for the purpose | | | | | Individal page | | | | Price, T., 20 Jul 1935, Miner, killed by a fall of roof [Date of Inquest] | | | | | Individal page | | CMHRC | | Price, Thomas, 05 Dec 1929, (accident: 04 Dec 1929), aged 28, Collier, Fall of roof. District Big Vein. It appears that the wires for the electric lighting (five lamps in a series) were so placed that they frequently got damaged by horses passing along the road, and that they were joined up by any and everyone, and that these joints were not covered and insulated. Rhead appears to have gone to examine the wires, which had again been disturbed by a horse, and in turning a slack one out of the way he caught a bare part, and received a severe shock, from which he died. Unfortunately there was no-one present who understood First Aid, or there seems every reason to think his life would have been saved.
