he was severely injured in Minor East Pit, Hetton Colliery on 19 November. He had been driving a horse with tubs attached when it began kicking. He tried to get out of the tub he was riding in to control the horse, but fell and was run over by several tubs. His left arm and thigh were broken; he died on 4 December
