Newspaper Articles Newspaper Articles 4th November 1880 Sad Fatality at Wellington Pit Mr. W. W. Lumb opened an inquest at Mr. King's house, Ginns, on Friday evening, touching the death of Edward Wilson, 66 years of age, a deputy-overman in Wellington Pit. Only formal evidence was taken, and the inquest was adjourned until yesterday. It appears that the deceased was going up the pit incline as six runaway tubs of coal were rushing down; and ere he could get away he was knocked down and run over. He was killed on the spot, the body being much mutilated. It seems the tubs broke away from the rolley owing to the breaking of the horse's hames. Deceased was an old and highly respected workman in the Whitehaven Colliery. — The adjourned inquest was held before Mr. Lumb yesterday (Wednesday) evening, and after hearing evidence a verdict of "Accidental death" was returned.
