Hume City - Entry - eMelbourne - The Encyclopedia of Melbourne Online (original) (raw)
This outer north-western municipality was created in 1994 by combining the former Shire of Bulla (less Diggers Rest) with parts of the former cities of Broadmeadows (Broadmeadows, Campbellfield, Coolaroo, Tullamarine, Westmeadows), Whittlesea (Somerton) and Keilor (Tullamarine). The city is named after the explorer Hamilton Hume who, with William Hovell, travelled from Yass in New South Wales to the Victorian coast in 1824-25. The Hume Highway, named after Hume, covers part of the explorers' route and passes through the City of Hume.
