Bear Alley - Entry - eMelbourne - The Encyclopedia of Melbourne Online (original) (raw)
Bear or Bears Alley (or Lane), running north off Little Collins Street, just east of Queen Street, was named for J.P. Bear in the 1850s. Bear's Horse Bazaar on Bourke Street is visible in S.T. Gill's 1857 drawing of Great Bourke Street looking east from Queen Street. The lane was renamed Penfold Place after the Adelaide wine company who established a storage facility there.
