A huge crowd saw West Ham stretch their unbeaten run to 23 games in all competitions in their relentless charge to a Wembley and promotion double. Even international call-ups and a missed penalty couldn't stop them winning again. The league run came to an end, two days later, at Barnsley, but they still won promotion, after losing in the FA Cup Final. Meanwhile, one of the founder members of the Football League, Wolves, who had won the FA Cup twice and reached the final again, just two years earlier, quietly dropped into the third division for the first time, after a dreadful season.

It was on 14 April 1923 that Austin Stack, the former Irish Minister for Home Affairs who had opposed the Anglo-Irish Treaty that created the Irish Free State, was captured by troops. In his possession was a document accepting a proposal to end the Irish Civil War with a ceasefire and the laying down of arms.
