Match Report by Mike Payne

Source Notes

England got their three points - and three goals - in a damp Josy Barthel Stadium but the team still looked out of sorts. In fact they could easily have gone behind just five minutes into the match. Southgate's hurried header back to Seaman fell short and the goalkeeper fouled Christophe, a building worker by trade, as he seized onto the chance. Memories of that early goal by San Marino in '93 came flooding back.

England were let off the hook this time as Theis missed by a mile from the penalty mark. Hugely relieved, the visitors began to dominate the match with Rio Ferdinand looking particularly stylish in possession. After 18 minutes he passed to Anderton who threaded a ball down the inside-right channel to Michael Owen to run onto and shoot past Koch for his fourth goal in 12 internationals.

Hoddle's team were much more confident now and passed the ball around to emphasise the gap in class. the unfortunate Theis, guilty of the penalty miss, gave one to England as his hand connected with an Anderton effort. Alan Shearer drove his kick powerfully into Koch's right-hand corner. Then England seemed to run out of steam after the second goal and there was a tendency to dwell on the ball in midfield.

England fans in the drenched crowd urged the visitors to keep piling on the attacks. Shearer obliged with a shot that went wide and a downward header that Koch clutched to his body. A third goal finally came - from the unlikely source of Gareth Southgate, his first England strike in 30 internationals. But it was hardly an inspiring night for Hoddle and his troops. - The Official F.A. and England Yearbook 1999-2000.
