The Seven Pre-War Penalty-Kicks Scored against England

- "If any player shall intentionally trip put on hold an opposing player, or deliberately handle the ball within twelve yards from his own goal-line, the referee shall, on appeal, award the opposing side a penalty kick, to be taken from any point twelve yards from the goal-line, under the following conditions:-All players, with the exception of the player taking the penalty kick and the opposing goal-keeper (who shall not advance more than six yards from the goal-line) shall stand at least six yards behind the ball. The ball shall be in play when the kick is taken, and a goal may be scored from the penalty kick." - 2 June 1891, Glasgow

1 June 1909, 8-1 vs. Austria,Hohe Warte Stadion, Wien Nineteen year-old inside-left Leopold Neubauer scored the first opposition penalty kick against England, it was against Sam Hardy (26 yrs 278 dys). Another source names Ludwig Hussak, who was a 25 year-old outside-right. The reason for the award is unknown.
2 1919-20
15 March 1920, 1-2 vs. Wales, Arsenal Stadium, Highbury 21 year-old centre-forward Stan Davies equalised with his fourteenth minute penalty kick against Sam Hardy (37 yrs 202 dys). The kick was awarded after captain Jesse Pennington handled the ball in the area.

1 November 1923, 2-2 vs. Belgium, Bosuil Stadion, Antwerpen 26 year-old left-half Achille Schelstraete put his country ahead with his 75th minute penalty kick against the debuting Ted Hufton (30 yrs 340 dys).
4 1926-27
12 February 1927, 3-3 vs. Wales, The Racecourse, Wrexham 27 year-old centre-forward Len Davies and already scored for his country before he despatched a 36th minute penalty kick against the debuting Jack Brown (27 yrs 329 dys) to even the scoreline at two each. The penalty was awarded after George Green was adjudged to have tackled Rees Williams unfairly.
5 1927-28
19 May 1928, 3-1 vs. Belgium, Olympisch Stadion, Antwerp 27 year-old inside-left Jacques Moeschal scored after 25 minutes against Ben Olney (29 yrs 58 dys) to open the scoring. The kick was awarded after Vince Matthews handled the ball. It is unsure whether this kick was taken outside or inside the penalty area.
6 1935-36
4 April 1936, 1-1 vs. Scotland, Empire Stadium, Wembley 20 year-old inside-right Tommy Walker scored his penalty kick after 76 minutes against Ted Sagar (26 yrs 57 dys) to equalise for his country. After a free-kick, debutant John Crum was brought down on the six-yard box. Keeping his nerve as the wind blew the ball of the spot.

19 November 1947, 4-2 vs. Sweden, Arsenal Stadium, Highbury 27 year-old inside-right Gunnar Gren **scored a 68th minute penalty kick against Frank Swift (33 yrs 328 dys) to score the second of the afternoon for his country. Both Neil Franklin and George Hardwick had a share in bringing down Gunnar Nordahl.

21 September 1949, 0-2 vs. Éire, Goodison Park, Liverpool 26 year-old centre-half Con Martin **scored a 32nd minute penalty kick that spun over the line despite a Bert Williams (29 yrs 233 dys) save. The penalty was awarded afterBert Mozley had brought down Peter Desmond.

28 November 1951, 2-2 vs. Austria, Empire Stadium, Wembley 26 year-old inside-left Ernst Stojaspal **scored an 88th minute left-sidefooted penalty kick which was almost saved by Gil Merrick (29 yrs 306 dys), who had got his hand to the kick. The penalty was awarded afterBill Eckersely used his hand to punch away Adolf Huber's header which was aiming towards the top corner of the goal. 25 May 1952, 2-3 vs. Austria, Praterstadion, Wien 26 year-old inside-left Adolf Huber **scored an 28th minute penalty kick to the right of Gil Merrick (30 yrs 120 dys). The penalty was awarded afterRobert Dienst was chasing a long ball and collapsed when Jack Froggatt attempted to tackle him. Dienst had kicked the ball too far in front of him.

8 June 1953, 6-3 vs. United States, Yankee Stadium, New York 29 year-old centre-forward George Athineos **scored a 66th minute penalty kick against Ted Ditchburn (32 yrs 227 dys) save. The penalty was dubiously awarded after Harry Johnston handled the ball in the area. 'The ball popped up up and hit Harry Johnston's hand in a tackle'.

21 October 1953, 4-4 vs. Rest of the World, Empire Stadium, Wembley 26 year-old centre-half Ladislav Kubala **scored a slow, precise sixth minute penalty kick to the right of Gil Merrick (31 yrs 268 dys). The penalty was awarded afterBernard Vukas was clipped from behind by Bill Eckersley as he was sprinting into the area.

15 May 1955, 0-1 vs. France, Stade Olympique Yves-du-Manoir, Paris 23 year-old centre-forward Raymond Kopa **scored the only goal of the match with a 37th minute penalty kick against Bert Williams (35 yrs 104 dys) amidst a hailstorm. The penalty was awarded after the referee, Elrich Schmetzer, controversially penalised Peter Sillett following his tackle on Jean Vincent. Williams slipped as Kopa took the kick.

9 April 1963, 1-2 vs. Scotland, Empire Stadium, Wembley 23 year-old left-half Jim Baxter **scored a 32nd minute penalty kick against the debuting Gordon Banks (25 yrs 97 days). The penalty kick was awarded Jim Baxter himself was fouled getting inbetween Roger Byrne and Ron Flowers.

29 April 1972, 1-3 vs. West Germany, Empire Stadium, Wembley 27 year-old forward Günter Netzer **scored an 85th minute penalty kick against Gordon Banks (34 yrs 121 days), going in off the post after the goalkeeper got both hands to the ball.

17 October 1979, 5-1 vs. Northern Ireland, Windsor Park, Belfast 22 year-old winger Vic Moreland **scored a 49th minute penalty kick against Peter Shilton (30 yrs 29 dys) to register his first ever international goal. The kick was awarded after after Mick Mills had brought down Sammy McIlroy. 13 May 1980, 3-1 vs. Argentina, Wembley Stadium, Wembley 26 year-old centre-back Daniel Passarella **scored a 55th minute penalty kick against Ray Clemence (31 yrs 282 dys). The kick was awarded after Kenny Sansom slid in on Diego Maradona. 31 May 1980, 2-1 vs. Australia, Cricket Ground, Sydney 23 year-old Gary Cole **scored an 88th minute penalty kick against Joe Corrigan (31 yrs 195 dys). The kick was awarded after Joe Corrigan fouled substitute Peter Sharne.

21 September 1983, 0-1 vs. Denmark, Wembley Stadium, Wembley Allan Simonsen became the first player to score two penalty kicks against England when he scored the only goal of the game after 38 minutes against Peter Shilton (34 yrs 3 dys) following a Phil Neal handball. 13 June 1984, 0-2 vs. Uruguay, Estadio Centenario, Montevideo Luis Acosta **scored with an eighth minute penalty kick against against Peter Shilton (34 yrs 269 dys).

8 February 1989, 2-1 vs. Greece, Olympiakó Stádio Spyros Louis, Athina Dimitris Saravakos **scored a first minute penalty kick against Peter Shilton (39 yrs 143 dys). Shilton is now the oldest keeper to concede a penalty kick.

The kick was awarded after Paul Gascoigne had stuck out his foot as Roger Miller ran into the area, attempting to glide past him, bringing him down. 7 July 1990, 1-2 vs. Italy, Stadio San Nicola, Bari Salvatore Schillaciscored a winning 85th minute penalty against Peter Shilton (40 yrs 293 dys), sending the keeper the wrong way with his right-footed strike going into the right of the goal. Awarded after Schillaci was himself brought down by Paul Parker on the line, as he took a pass from Baggio.

28 April 1993, 2-2 vs. Netherlands, Wembley Stadium, Wembley Peter van Vossen scored an 85th minute penalty kick against Chris Woods (33 yrs 165 dys), sending him the wrong way**. The penalty was awarded after Des Walker began to hold back Marc Overmars' shirt outside the penalty area, collapsing inside the area**.
