Was captain of the Manchester, Lancashire and England schoolboys before signing apprentice forms with Manchester United in June 1953, turning professional in November 1954.He went on to play 81 league matches, scoring twice. Broke his leg in a reserve match in 1959, an injury that forced his eventual retirement in December 1961. |

After retiring from playing at the tender age off 22, Manchester United FC kept McGuinness on their books, offering him coaching roles at Old Trafford. Firstly, as the Youth Team coach, was also part-time trainer of the England Youth Team between from 1963 until his appointment as Chief Coach in June 1969. He became United's team manager from August 1970, until dropping back down into coaching and managing the Reserve team from December 1970 until March 1971. After being unceremoniously dumped by the Old Trafford board, McGuinness joined Aris Salonika in the Greece Football League in July 1971 until 1973, whereupon he joined Panaraiki. He returned to England in late 1974 to scout for Everton FC, before becoming York City FC's manager from February 1975 until his sacking after several relegations in October 1977. Next stop, Hull City AFC as First Team Coach from July 1978 until December 1979. Bury FC employed him in various posts from August 1980, including Reserve Team Coach, Assistant Manager and Physiotherapist. |
