Swan joined Sheffield Wednesday FC in 1952, but his career came to an abrupt end following his involvement in a betting ring, for which he spent six months in prison. He returned to Wednesday, until 1973, when he signed for Bury FC, then Matlock Town FC and Worksop Town FC.
