- Writing under the pseudonym of "Emile Ajar," author Romain Gary becomes the only person to ever win the Prix Goncourt twice.
- Hearing Secret Harmonies, the twelfth and final novel of the A Dance to the Music of Time duodecalogy by Anthony Powell is published. In 2001, the A Dance to the Music of Time collection would be named to the list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century by the editorial board of the American Modern Library.
- Ragtime by E.L. Doctorow is published. In 2001, the book would be named as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century by the editorial board of the American Modern Library.
