Belisce (original) (raw)
Belišće is a town in Croatia. It is located in the region of Slavonia, 6 km north of Valpovo; elevation 93 m; population 11,943 (2001). This industrial town upon the Drava river lies near the border with Hungary.
Chief occupations are farming, forestry, wood processing (sawmill, chemical and mechanical wood processing), cardboard packaging, metal industry, chemicals and synthetic material processing.
The influential Gutman family made a significant impact on the Belišće region in the 19th and 20th century. Once vast Slavonian forests of oak are mostly replaced with farmland, and a section of the working-class quarters of Salamon H. Gutman from 1884 is a part of the present-day Belišće. There's a place called Gutmanovci in the vicinity, too.
Major recreational activities include angling on the Drava river and its backwaters and hunting in the broader surroundings.
