Bentonville is a city located in Benton County, Arkansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 19,730. It is the headquarters of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. The city is the county seat of Benton County6.

Government

Bentonville has a mayor-city council form of government. The Bentonville Parks Commission, Advertising & Promotion Commission, Library Board, Airport Commission, Planning Commission, Historic District Committee, Tree & Landscape Committee, and the Board of Adjustments are city groups of commissions that contribute to the community. Bentonville is the county seat of Benton County, so it is also home to various county offices.

Geography

Bentonville is located at 36°22'0" North, 94°12'48" West (36.366709, -94.213355)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 55.1 km² (21.3 mi²). 55.0 km² (21.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.09% water.

Demographics

Bentonville's population has been growing at a rapid rate. A special census in 1995 showed a population of 15,363 which was up from 11,257 in 1990. As of the census2 of 2000, there are 19,730 people, 7,458 households, and 5,265 families residing in the city. The population density is 358.7/km² (928.9/mi²). There are 7,924 housing units at an average density of 144.0/km² (373.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 90.92% White, 0.88% Black or African American, 1.33% Native American, 2.40% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.68% from other races, and 1.76% from two or more races. 6.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,458 households out of which 40.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.6% are married couples living together, 11.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.4% are non-families. 24.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.11.

In the city the population is spread out with 29.5% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 34.2% from 25 to 44, 17.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 93.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.3 males.

Bentonville is home to Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport, which also serves Fayetteville, Arkansas and Springdale, Arkansas.
