History

On September 4, 1941, the Charente Inf�rieure d�partement was renamed Charente-Maritime.

Geography

The land area is 6848 km2.

Neighbouring d�partements are Gironde in the south, Dordogne to the southeast, Charente to the east and Deux-S�vres and Vend�e to the north.

Charente-Maritime includes the islands Ile de R� and Ile d'Ol�ron.
