Clayton County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 236,517. The county's county seat is Jonesboro, Georgia6.

This county is a part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area.

Geography

\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 374 km² (144 mi²). 369 km² (143 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.15% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 37.94% White, 51.55% Black or African American, 0.32% Native American, 4.49% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 3.55% from other races, and 2.08% from two or more races. 7.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 82,243 households out of which 40.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.70% are married couples living together, 20.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.00% are non-families. 21.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.84 and the average family size is 3.30. In the county the population is spread out with 30.00% under the age of 18, 10.40% from 18 to 24, 35.40% from 25 to 44, 18.40% from 45 to 64, and 5.90% who are 65 years of age or older.
