Cotton Bowl (original) (raw)

The Cotton Bowl is a United States college football game played annually since 1937 in Dallas, Texas.

For 40 years the champion of the now-defunct Southwest Conference played as the home team in the Cotton Bowl. When the conference folded in 1996, the bowl lost much of its stature. It now matches teams from the Big Twelve Conference and Southeastern Conference.

Note: When Marquette University played in the inaugural Cotton Bowl, the school nickname was Warriors. The school did not adopt its current nickname of Golden Eagles until the 1990s.

The Cotton Bowl also refers to a stadium which opened in 1932. It is located on the State Fair Grounds in Dallas, Texas. Former Tenants include: SMU Mustangs (NCAA), Dallas Cowboys (NFL; 1960-1970), Dallas Texans (NFL) (1952), Kansas City Chiefs ( as The Dallas Texans) (AFL; 1960-1962), Dallas Burn (MLS; 1996-2003), and the Dallas Tornado (NASL; 1967-1968).

The annual Texas-Oklahoma college football game is played here, instead of a campus site. Ticket sales are equally divided between the two schools.

The Cotton Bowl has a grass surface.
