Kamenz is a Kreis (district) in the north-east of Saxony, Germany. Neighboring districts are (from north clockwise) Oberspreewald-Lausitz, Spree-Nei�e, Oberlausitzkreis, Bautzen, S�chsische Schweiz, the district-free city Dresden, and the districts Mei�en and Riesa-Gro�enhain. The district-free city Hoyerswerda is completely sorrounded by the district.

History

In 1994 the previous district Hoyerswerda as well as part of the district Dresden were added to the district Kamenz. From 1994 to 1996 it was called Westlausitz - Dresdner Land, but then renamed back to the old name Kamenz.

Geography

The two major rivers in the district are the Spree and the Schwarze Elster (Black Elster).

Partnerships

Since December 14, 1990 the district has a partnership with the district Alzey-Worms in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Coat of arms

Upper Lusatia. The black wing on the right side is the symbol of the Lords of Kamenz. The linden leave in the top if the left half stands for the Sorbs minority. The wavy line below symbolizes the three rivers Roeder, Elster and Spree. The three rings in the bottom symbolize the unification of the three previous districts, the symbol was taken from the poem "Nathan der Weise" by Lessing.
