La Fayette is a city located in Walker County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,702. The city is the county seat of Walker County6.

The racial makeup of the city is 90.60% White, 7.13% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.76% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 1.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,721 households out of which 28.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.9% are married couples living together, 17.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% are non-families. 32.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.94.
