Liberty is a city located in Liberty County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,033. It is the county seat of Liberty County6.

census of 2000, there are 8,033 people, 2,860 households, and 2,053 families residing in the city. The population density is 88.5/km² (229.2/mi²). There are 3,187 housing units at an average density of 35.1/km² (90.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 75.54% White, 13.11% African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 9.25% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. 14.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,860 households out of which 35.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.9% are married couples living together, 12.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% are non-families. 25.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.16. In the city the population is spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who are 65 years of age or older.
