A corporate ancestor of Lockheed Martin, the Lockheed Corporation aerospace company was formed in 1932 by the brothers Allan and Malcom Loughhead, who had built their first plane in 1913.
The company has built both commercial and military aircraft.
In 1996, the company merged with the Martin Marietta Corporation to form Lockheed Martin.
The company's headquarters are in Bethesda, Maryland.
