Vegetation description
Mangrove forests in Togo are well preserved and they extend along some river banks. Only two species of mangrove trees have been reported: Rhizophora racemosa and Avicennia africana. These species form communities that occur along the Gbaga river and its tributaries; some scattered stands of mangroves are also present on the banks of the Mono river (West of Agbanakin) and at the entrance of Aheno lagoon. The tallest mangrove trees can reach 20 meters in height.

Trends in mangrove area extent over time
The figure for 1980 has been calculated applying FRA 1990 (FAO, 1995) annual forest cover change rate for 1980-1990 (-1.6 percent) to1990 estimate; the estimates for 1990 and 2000 are based on FRA 2000 (FAO, 2001) annual forest cover change rate for 1990-2000 (-3.4 percent) applied to the most recent, reliable figure.
