Apple began ITunesU, with Stanford and Berkeley, my alma mater, offering free courses as podcasts. It will be possible for us to offer Free University courses in a similar way. Contact me if you would be interested in such an offering. We are not commercial and could only accept a donation towards the project, which includes also our holding alphabet school for illiterate but highly intelligent adults, Roma from Romania who restore this cemetery. But in fact we find magical moments in our Mediatheca 'Fioretta Mazzei' in Florence's 'English' Cemetery when spontaneously people of different languages and geographical places come together and share culture. Today, 12 May 2016, it was a professor from Russia with computer technology for the Arts and Humanities discussing Russian literature with Italians and English people. In the past it has been a Russian poet and a Welsh poet discoursing on Dylan Thomas and translating him into Russian. Or a Brazilian Amerindian reading an Elizabeth Barrett Browning Sonnet from the Portuguese in Portuguese, or a Maori chanting his genealogy. Or Romanian Roma exclaiming over Dante and medieval illuminated manuscripts. Or the Roma listening while I record Carlo Poli read Dante's Commedia. Tomorrow, 13 May 2016, it will be Chinese students discussing Dante's music. See Arabesquing the University or Quartz, Why I'd rather teach illiterate Roma than Princeton University Students. We don't need a managerial university with poorly paid adjuncts, structured in a vertical hierarchy. We can run this university with no funding. In a library filled with printed books and also with oral poetry and conversations. It is a spontaneous salon, much like James Joyce's Ulysses Library chapter. Everyone equal.
