INTRODUCTION

This document sets out the families of the archbishops of Lyon and of the bishops of the four bishoprics which lay within the archiepiscopal diocese.� At present, the document is only partially completed.� It has been uploaded in Medieval Lands at this early stage in its development mainly to complete the hyperlinks to other documents.�

Chapter 1.��� ARCHBISHOPS of LYON

  1. AMBLARD, son of ARMAND [III] & his wife --- (-[Mar 947/Feb 962]).� Etienne [II] Bishop of Clermont donated property to Saint-Julien de Brioude for the souls of "�avunculo quoque meo Armando et filio suo Amblardo�" by charter dated 7 Oct 945[1].� "Amblardus et uxor mea Fides" donated property "in patria Arvernica in comitatu Telamitensi�in villa�Vernerias�Preisago�Matticarra" to Saint-Julien de Brioude, for the souls of "Ermani genitoris mei�et�Roberti vicecomitis et Stephani episcopi et Eustorgii sui avunculi, et suorum infantium", by charter dated Mar [947], signed by "Stephani episcopi et Eustorgii"[2].� Etienne [II] Bishop of Clermont donated property to Saint-Julien de Brioude for the souls of "�avunculi mei Armandi et filii eius Amblardi�" by charter dated Feb 962[3].�Archbishop of Lyon .� m FOI, daughter of --- (-after Mar [947]).� "Amblardus et uxor mea Fides" donated property "in patria Arvernica in comitatu Telamitensi�in villa�Vernerias�Preisago�Matticarra" to Saint-Julien de Brioude, for the souls of "Ermani genitoris mei�et�Roberti vicecomitis et Stephani episcopi et Eustorgii sui avunculi, et suorum infantium", by charter dated Mar [947], signed by "Stephani episcopi et Eustorgii"[4].�

Two brothers:�

  1. BURCHARD, son of RUDOLF II King of Upper Burgundy & his wife Berta of Swabia (-[23 Jun 957/959]). �"Bertha�Regina" names "filiis meis Conrado�rege�et Rodolpho duce" in a donation "pro anima domini mei Rodulphi Regis et�filii mei Burchardi episcopi�" by charter dated 1 Apr 961[5].� He was elected Archbishop of Lyon before 949.�

  2. CONRAD I King of Burgundy.� Mistress: ALDIUD, wife of ANSELM, daughter of ---.� Illegitimate child:�

a) BURCHARD([965/70]-22 Jun 1030 or 1031).� The Chronicon Hugonis names "Burchardus, Rodulfi regis frater, Conradi ex concubina filius", specifying that he was made Archbishop of Lyon when still a child[6].� The identity of his mother is established by the charter dated 19 Aug [1019] under which "Burchardus sancta Viennensis archiepiscopus et Udolricus frater meus et advocatus meus" granted property "in pago Genevensi�in villa Marischa�a circio Lemani lacus" made "pro remedio animarum�genitore nostro Anselmo sive pro genetrice nostra Aaldui"[7].� He was elected Archbishop of Lyon in 978.� "Filii nostri Burcardi archiepiscopi" consented to a grant of "Chuonradus rex" dated 983[8].� Provost of Saint-Maurice d'Agaune in 983.� Rivaz, in his compiled index of Burgundian charters. notes a charter dated 1 Nov 1002 under which "Burchard arch�v�que de Lyon et abb� de Saint-Maurice" granted property "dans les comt�s de Valais et de Vaud" to "Gauslin", with the consent of "Anselme son fr�re �v�que d'Aoste et pr�v�t de ladite abbaye"[9].� A charter dated 14 Feb 1005 records that "Burchardum Lugdunensem archiepiscopum" donated property "in loco Oponlongis infra comitatum Ottingen" which he had "ex patre matris su� Aldiud quod rex Chuonradus ei pr�buit", through "advocatorem suum Vuidonem", to "Anselmum Augustanum episcopum" in exchange for "terram S. Mauritii in valle Augustana"[10].� Rudolf III King of Burgundy donated property to Vienne Saint-Maurice, at the request of "Irmengarda regina, Burkardo Lugdunensi archiepiscopo fratre suo, nec non Burchardo Viennensi archiepiscopo", by charter dated 1 Aug 1011[11]..�

  1. BURCHARD, son of HUMBERT I Comte de Maurienne et de Chablais & his wife Auxilia --- ([995/1000] or after-after 10 Jul 1068).� Lanter Bishop of Langres granted property "in comitatu Genevensi et pago Albonensi in villa�Casei", except for that part held by "Ermengardis regina", to "nostro amico Humberto comiti et duobus heredibus filiis eius�unus�Amedeus et alter Burchardus episcopus" for life, by charter dated 8 Apr 1022[12].� Bishop of Aosta .� "Brocardu epm" [Bishop of Aosta] approved a donation by "Katelmus" by charter dated 19 Oct 1025, signed by "domni Umbertus comes"[13].� Rodolfus Glaber names "Burcardi nepos eiusdem equivocus", referring to Burchard Archbishop of Lyon who was an illegitimate son of Conrad I King of Burgundy by his mistress Aldiud wife of Anselm, when recording that the second Burchard "deserted his own see of Aosta in order rashly to seize Lyon"[14].� Coadjutor of Aosta.� Provost of Saint-Maurice d'Agaune.� Archbishop of Lyon1030, deposed.� Radulfus Glaber records that �_Burcardi nepos, eiusdem �quivocus_� left �_sede propria Augustan� civitatis_� and imposed himself as archbishop of Lyon after the death of archbishop Burchard in 1033, and that "Burchardus III Archiep. Lugd. olim August. Episc." was captured by imperial troops and sent into exile in 1034[15].� "Hubertus comes" donated property to the canons of Saint-Jean and Saint-Urse by charter dated 1040, signed and consented to by "Oddo, Amedeus comes, Aymo Sedunensis episcopus, Brochardus filius Huberti comitis, Petrus marchio filius Odonis marchionis et commitiss�"[16].� "Burchardus Agannensis abbati� abbas�" donated property by charter dated 10 Jul 1068[17].�

  2. HALINARD de Sombernon, son of GARNIER [I] Seigneur de Sombernon & his wife Istiburge [Engelburge] --- (-Rome 1052).� His parentage is confirmed by the necrology of Saint-B�nigne which records the death "XI Kal Nov" of his mother "Istiburgis, nostra amica, mater abbatis nostri"[18].� Abbot of Saint-B�nigne de Dijon 1031.� Archbishop of Lyon .�

  3. RENAUD de Semur, son of GEOFFROY [III] Seigneur de Semur & his wife Ermengarde de Semur (-7 Aug 1129).� The genealogy of the Seigneurs de Semur, included in the cartulary of Marcigny-sur-Loire and dated to [1144], names "Jaufrois et Rainauld qui fut abb� de V�zelay et arch�v�que de Lion" as children of "Gaufrois et�Ermengarde"[19].� "Gaufredus de Sinemuro" donated property to the abbey of Marcigny-sur-Loire when becoming a monk "cum uxore mea�Ermengarde et uno filio ac duabus filiabus" by charter dated 1088 before 29 Aug[20].� It is assumed that "uno filio" refers to Renaud.� He was abbot of V�zelay in 1106, until 1125.� "Gaufredus de Sinemuro germanus domni Raynaldi Vizeliacensis abbatis" donated property to the abbey of Marcigny-sur-Loire by charter dated to [1106/08][21].� "Emma uxor Gaufredi nepotis mei" witnessed a charter at Marcigny-sur-Loire under which "Raynaldus Vizeliacensis abbas" noted various donations[22].�Archbishop of Lyon in 1125[23].�

  4. HUMBERT de B�g�, son of ULRIC [IV] Seigneur de B�g� & his wife --- (-12 Oct or 13 Nov 1180).� The primary source which confirms his parentage has not yet been identified.��� Bishop of Autun 1140/1148.� Archbishop of Lyon 1148, resigned [1157].� Cartusian Prior at Seillon.� The 13th century obituary of the Eglise primatiale de Lyon records the death "IV Id Oct" of "Humbertus, Valle Sancte Marie monachus et quondam Lugdunensis archiepiscopus"[24].�

  5. DRODON de Beauvoir, son of SIBOUD [I] de Beauvoir & his wife P�tronille --- ([12 Apr 1164/17 Apr 1170]).� �_Sigiboudus de Bellovidere...et Willelmus filius meus...Drodo et Siebodus filii mei_� confirmed donations to Bonnevaux during the papacy of Calixtus II by charter dated 1135[25].� Archdeacon of Lyon: �_Dominus Drodo de Bellovidere Lug[unenis] archidiaconus_� granted property to �_Johanni Belloth et Johanni de Quireu..._�, in exchange for �_nemore quod frater eius in extremo vite sue_� had donated to Bonnevaux, undated[26].� Chevalier dates this document to 1160[27].� �_Drodo de Bellovidere_� confirmed the donation made to Bonnevaux by �_frater meus Sibodus in extremis suis_�, recording the presence of �_Petrus Rovoiria...et Burno et Symphredus fratres eius_�, by charter dated 1160[28]. �Elected Archbishop of Lyon: Gallia Christiana records the election of �_Drogo ecclesi� Lugdunensis primum archidiaconum_� as archbishop, denounced by Louis VII King of France, dated to [1163][29].� �_Drodo de Bellovidere Lugdunensis electus_� donated �_---villam---_� to Bonnevaux, with the support of �_Willelmus...nepos meus_�, noting that �_Rostagnus de Bellovidere et fratres eius Ervisius et Borno, et item Rostagnus de Colungiis et frater eius Borno, Boso de Burnay et frater eius Drodo, Oolardus de Bellovidere et Ademarus de Bellovidere cognatus eius, et filii Isardi de Bellagarda_� also held interests �_in ipsa villa_� which they also donated, by charter dated 1164[30].� �_Drodo de Bellovidere Lugdunensis electus_� exchanged property with Bonnevaux �_pro utilitate nepotum meorum Willelmi et Drodonis_�, with �_Petrus Rovoria et Rostagnus de Colungiis_� as guarantors, by charter dated 1164[31].� �_Drodon �lu de Lyon_� donated property to Vienne Saint-Pierre, with the consent of �_ses neveux Guillaume et Drodon_�, by charter dated [12 Apr] 1164[32].� A bull of Pope Alexander III dated 17 Apr 1170 records donations to Bonnevaux, among which the donation made by �_Drodonis quondam Lugdunensis electi_�[33].�

  1. JEAN .� Archbishop of Lyon.�

a) JEAN .� Pope Honorius III requested the archbishop of Canterbury to �_make provision as soon as may be for John, nephew of J. late archbishop of Lyons, in a prebend in his diocese, G. cardinal of St Martin�s having while legate taken away the benefice which he had in the church of London_�, dated 13 Oct 1219[34].�

  1. RENAUD de Forez, son of GUY [II] Comte de Forez & his wife Guillelme --- (-21 Oct 1226).� The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines records the death of "archiepiscopus Lugdunensis Renaldus�filius comitis Forensis"[35].�Archbishop of Lyon [1193].� "Guigo comes Forensis et Raynaldus prim� ecclesi� Lugdun. archiepiscopus" confirmed a donation to the monastery of Val-Beno�t made by "matrone�Willelma de Rossillone soror Jauserandi de Piseys et mater Bearud� uxoris Ramerii Albe de Chamas" by charter dated 1195[36].� Regent of Forez 1203/15.� "R�Lugdunensis ecclesi� archiepiscopus" donated property to Cluny, as instructed by "Guidonis fratris mei comitis Forensis" who had assigned "comitatum Forensem in manu mea nomine tutel� liberorum ipsius, nepotum meorum", to found an anniversary for his brother, with the consent of "patris mei et nepos meus Guigo et sorores eius Guigona et Marquissa et uxor fratris mei Adaladix comitissa", by charter dated Dec 1203[37].� "Rainaudus�prime Lugdunensis ecclesie minister" confirmed the grant of exemptions to the Chartreuse d'Oujon by "Guigo comes Forensis pater noster", by charter dated 1212[38].� "Raynaudus�prim� Lugdunensis ecclesi� minister" founded an anniversary for "fratris nostri Guigonis comitis Foresii�qui sepultus fuit apud Accon in ecclesia Hospitalis", with the consent of "Guigonis nepotis nostri", by charter dated 1215 which names "Guigo comes pater noster"[39].� The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines records the death in 1227 of �_archiepiscopus Lugdunensis Renaldus...filius comitis Forensis_� and the succession of �_episcopus Clarimontensis de Alvernia Robertus cuius frater fuit Guido comes Alvernensis_�[40].� The 13th century obituary of the Eglise primatiale de Lyon records the death "XI Kal Nov" of "Raynaudus archiepiscopus Lugdunensis"[41].�

Two brothers:�

  1. ROBERT d�Auvergne, son of ROBERT [IV] Comte d�Auvergne et de Clermont & his wife Mathilde de Bourgogne [Capet] (-Lyon 6 Jan 1234, bur Lyon Saint-Jean).� Bishop of Clermont1198.� The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines records that "Robertus frater Guilelmi et Guidonis comitum Alvernie" was installed as Bishop of Clermont in Auvergne in 1198[42].� A charter dated May 1201 records disputes between "dominum Robertum�Claromontensem episcopum et Guidonem�comitem Arverni�", mediated by "domino Odone�duce Burgundi�" and naming "domina Mathildis mater eius"[43].�Archbishop of Lyon 1227.� The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines records the death in 1227 of �_archiepiscopus Lugdunensis Renaldus...filius comitis Forensis_� and the succession of �_episcopus Clarimontensis de Alvernia Robertus cuius frater fuit Guido comes Alvernensis_�[44].� The testament of "Robertus�prime Lugdunensis ecclesie archiepiscopus", dated Jun 1232, appointed "nepotem nostrum Hugonem episcopum Claromontensem et Guidonem fratrem eius archidiaconum Lugdunensem�"[45].� The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines records the death in 1234 of �_Robertum...archiepiscopum Lugdunensem_�[46].� The necrology of Clermont records the death "VIII Id Jan" of "R. archiepiscopi Lugdunensis"[47].�

  2. GUY [II] Comte d�Auvergne.� m ([1180]) PETRONILLE de Chambon, daughter of AMELIUS [III] de Chambon {Puy-de-D�me} & his wife Dalmatie ---.� Children:�

a) GUILLAUME[X] Comte d�Auvergne.� m ALEIDIS of Brabant, daughter of HENRI I Duke of Brabant & his first wife Mathilde de Flandre.� Children:�

i) GUY d�Auvergne (-Feb 1279).� The testament of "Guillermus comes Claromontensis", dated Feb 1245, chooses burial "in monasterio del Boschet in sepulcro bon� memori� patris nostri", appoints "Robertum filium nostrum�sub custodia�Hugonis�episcopi Claromontensis consanguinei nostri" as his heir and names "Guidonem filium nostrum clericum�Guillermum et Godefridum filios nostros�Henricum filium nostrum"[48].�Archbishop of Lyon 1267.�

ii) ROBERT [V] Comte d�Auvergne.� m ELEONORE de Baffie, daughter of GUILLAUME [II] Seigneur de Baffie & his wife S--- de Forez.� Children:�

(a) ROBERT [VI] Comte d�Auvergne et de Boulogne.� m BEATRIX de Montgascon, daughter of FAUCON [III] Seigneur de Montgascon & his wife Isabelle de Ventadour.� Children:�

(1) ROBERT [VII] Comte d�Auvergne.� m BLANCHE de Clermont, daughter of ROBERT de France Comte de Clermont Sire de Bourbon & his wife B�atrix dame de Bourbon.� Children:�

a. GUY d�Auvergne (-Lerida 25 Nov 1373, bur Le Bouchet).�A charter dated May 1326 recognised property of "Guillaume comte de Boulogne" granted to "Jehan, Guy, Robert et Godefroy ses freres et a Mahaut et Marguerite ses seurs"[49].� A charter dated 1334 records an agreement between "domina Maria de Flandria comitissa Boloni� et Arverni� relicta...Roberti quondam comitis Boloni� et Arverni�, tutrix...Godofredi, Mari� et Margarit� liberorum suorum et dicti quondam comitis...et...Johannes et Guido de Bolonia fratres filii dict� domin� Mari� comitiss�" and "dominus Guillelmus Boloni� et Arverni� comes primogenitus dicti Roberti..."[50].� Archbishop of Lyon 1340.� The testament of "domini Guidonis episcopi Portuensis et sanct� Ruffin�...Cardinalis", dated 25 Dec 1372, appoints "germanos meos Johannem comitem et Godefridum de Bolonia fratres meos" as his heirs, makes bequests to "Matildim de Bolonia comitissam Gebennensem sororem meam...Petrum eius filium nepotem meum...masculum primogenitum...domino Roberto de Gebennis...nepote meo...Margaret� de Bolonia sorori me�"[51].� The necrology of Amiens cathedral records the death "VI Kal Oct" of "domini Guidonis de Bolonia filii quondam domini Roberti Boloni� et Alverni� comitis, hujus ecclesi� in juventute canonici, post archiepiscopi Lugdunensis...Cardinalis"[52].�

  1. RAOUL (-1236).� Archbishop of Lyon .� The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines records the death in 1236 of �_Radulfus Lugdunensis archiepiscopus_�[53].�

Two brothers:�

  1. PHILIPPE de Savoie, son of THOMAS I Comte de Savoie & his wife Marguerite [Beatrix] de Gen�ve (Aiguebelle [1207]-Ch�teau de Roussillon, Bugey 16 Aug 1285, bur Abbaye de Hautecombe).� His parentage is established, inter alia, by the 1264 testament of his brother Boniface[54].� Archdeacon of Metz 1229.� "M. comitissa Sabaudie et marchisa in Ytalia et�Amedeus, Aymo, W. electus Valentinus, Thomas, Petrus, Bonifacius et Philippus filii Thome Comitis Sab. et marchionis in Ytalia" confirmed donations to Hautecombe abbey by charter dated 26 Feb 1231[55].� The second testament of "Amedeus comes Sabaudie", dated 19 Jul 1238, repeats the nomination of "Thomam fratrem suum" as his heir, substituting "Philippum, huic autem Petrum fratres suos" if Thomas died without male heirs[56], although it is unclear why the youngest brother Philippe should have been given precedence over Pierre in this document.� He was elected Bishop of Lausanne in 1239.� "Amedeus comes Sabaudie et in Italie marchio�cum�genetrice sua et fratribus suis B. Bellicensi Electo et Philippo Metensi Primicerio" granted "villam S. Mauritii de Chablaisio" {Saint-Maurice de Chablais} to "soror illorum Margareta comitissa de Kiborch" by charter dated 24 Feb 1240[57].� Bishop of Valence 1245.� Archbishop of Lyon 1246.� The testament of "Philippi de Sabaudia electi Lugdunensis", dated 26 May 1256, names "Petrus de Sabaudia frater et Beatrix comitissa Provinci�" as his heirs, chooses burial at Hautecombe, and founds an anniversary at Valence for the soul of "defuncti fratris sui Willelmi, electi illius ecclesi�"[58].� The testament of "Beatricis relict� Raimundi Berengarii comitis Provinci�", dated 14 Jan 1264, adds bequests to "Philippo electo Lugdun. fratri suo altero�", and appoints "�Philippum electum Lugdun. fratrem suum�" as her executors[59].� The testament of "Conte Pietro di Savoia", dated Sep 1264 named "�Philippo electo Lugdun. fratri suo�" and appointed "Philippi elect. Lugdun. fratris sui, Soffredi de Amaysino" as his executors[60].� He resigned his ecclesiastical appointments in 1267.� Comte Palatin de Bourgogne 1267-1279, by right of his wife.� He succeeded his brother in 1268 as**PHILIPPE I Comte de Savoie**.� He faced the continual opposition of his niece Beatrix Dauphine de Viennois, daughter of his predecessor, who claimed Savoy for her grandson Hugues de la Tour.� Comte Philippe was able to reaffirm his authority over Turin by defeating Guglielmo VII Marchese di Monferrato[61].� Pope Gregory X awarded him the title Gonfalionere of the Holy Church.� The testament of "Filippo Vescovo de Lione" dated 26 Jul 1256 names "Pietro di Savoia e Beatrice Contessa di Provenza, di Lui fratello e Sorella�Conte Tommaso di Lui fratello" and chooses to be buried "nella Chiesa de Haute Combe"[62].� The necrology of Saint-Rambert-en-Bugey records the death "XVI Kal Sep" of "Philippus comes Sabaudi�"[63].� The necrology of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne records the death "XVI Kal Sep" of "dni Philippi quondam comitis Sabaudie"[64].�

  2. THOMAS II Comte de Savoie.� m secondly BEATRICE Fieschi, daughter of TEODORO Fieschi Conte di Lavagna & his wife Simona ---.� Children:�

a) THOMAS de Savoie Conte di Piemonte. �m GUYE de Bourgogne, daughter of HUGUES de Chalon Comte Palatin de Bourgogne, Seigneur de Salins & his wife Alix Ctss Palatine de Bourgogne [Andechs-Merano].� Children:�

i) PIERRE de Savoie (-Nov 1332).� The testament of "Thomas de Sabaudia primogenitus�domini Thom� de Sabaudia comitis" dated 14 May 1282 appoints "Philippum de Sabaudia filium meum primogenitum" as his heir provided he provides sufficient appanages "aliis filiis meis Petro, Thom�, Amedeo et Guillermo fratribus suis"[65].� A charter dated 24 May 1286 records the results of a commission relating to Piemonte and declarations by "Ludovicus de Sabaudia" and by "Guia de Burgundia relicata�domini Thome de Sabaudia�filiorum nostrorum�Philippi Petri Thome Amedei et Guillelmi"[66].� Deacon at Salisbury and canon at Lyon in 1304.� "Pietro di Savoia Decano di Salisbury in Inghilterra" issued a _quittance_to "Conte Amedeo di Savlia" dated "la festa di S, Giorgio 1304"[67].� Archbishop of Lyon 1308.� He was expelled from Lyon in 1312 by Philippe IV "le Bel" King of France, but re-established in 1320 by King Philippe V[68].� Seigneur de Montfaucon 1324.� Seigneur de Sept�me 1331.�

  1. RAOUL de Thourotte, son of GUILLAUME de Thourotte & his wife Beatrix de Beaumont-sur-Oise Dame de Persan (-7 Apr 1287).� Archbishop of Lyon 1285.���

  2. BERAUD de Goth, son of BERAUD de Goth & his wife Ide de Blanquefort (-27 Jul 1297).� Cardinal, Bishop of Albane Sep 1244.� Archbishop of Lyon .� He was appointed papal legate by Pope Boniface VIII 13 Apr 1296 to negotiate peace between France and England[69]. �

  3. AYMAR de Roussillon, son of ARTAUD [IV] Seigneur de Roussillon & his wife M--- (-[1282/83]).� "Artaud sire de Roussillon�Aymar, Amed�e, Alyse et Beatrix ses enfants" donated their rights "sur la succession de feu Guy comte de Forez" to "Guillaume fils dudit Artaud" by charter dated Nov 1262[70].�Archbishop of Lyon 1274.� Gallia Christiana records Aymar Archbishop of Lyon as "Ademarus de Roussillon...filius Artaldi IV domini de Rossilione frater Amedei Valentinensis et Diensis episcopi, Sabaudi�, Burgundi� et Genev� comitum consanguineus"[71], but does not indicate the primary source on which this information is based.� However, the testament of "Thomas de Sabaudia primogenitus�domini Thom� de Sabaudia comitis" dated 14 May 1282 appointed his children�s mother as tutor for his sons with the assistance of "consanguineum meum R. patrem dominum Aymarum archiepiscopum Lugdunensem et�"[72].� It is assumed that "R." in this source is a mistake for "A." indicating "Artaudum".�

BRUNO de Roucy, son of RENAUD Comte [de Roucy] & his wife Alberade de Hainaut ([955/56]-29 Jan 1016).� His parentage is deduced from Rodulfus Glaber stating that "Willemus, Henrici ducis priuignus, Adalberti Longobardorum ducis filius" married the sister of "Brunone Lingonensi episcopo", when recording that the latter supported his brother-in-law in the latter's rebellion against the king [Robert II][98].� Cleric at Reims.� The Chronicle of St B�nigne de Dijon records that King Lothaire installed "Brunoni Remensis Ecclesie clerico�suo vero parenti propinquitate consanguinitatis" as bishop of Langres in 980[99], King Lothaire being the uterine half-brother of Bruno's mother.� The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines records the appointment of "Bruno clericus Remensis regis Lotharii propinquus" as bishop of Langres in 980 at the age of 24[100].� The Acta Concilii Remensis ad Sanctum Basolum quotes Bruno Bishop of Langres referring to "unicum fratrem meum comitem Gislebertum, meumque consobrinum comitem Guidonem"[101], although the latter has not been identified.� His necrology records the death of "Brunonis episcopi Lingonice" aged 60 after 36 years in his bishopric but does not specify his date of death[102].�

[Two] brothers, parents not known:�

  1. LAMBERT (-23 Aug 1030).� Bishop of Langres .� The Chronicle of St B�nigne de Dijon records a donation of "ecclesiam�in villa Islo-super-Mosam fluvium in comitatu Bassignacensi" by "matrona�Letgardis�soror Lamberti episcopi" [probably Bishop of Langres], undated but among other records of donations in the late 1020s[103].� Ernest Petit suggests that "soror" could be interpreted in this document as meaning sister-in-law as well as sister[104].�

  2. RICHARD Comte de Bassigny.� m LETGARDE, daughter of [MILO [II] Comte de Tonnerre & his wife Ingeltrude ---].� Children:�

a) [RICHARD (-end 1030).� "Leotgarda comitissa�ac filii mei Rogerii" donated "terram�in villa�Jassant" to Saint-Michel by charter dated to [1005], signed by "Rogerius comes, Richardus, Rainardus comes, Alberic, Erembertus vicecomes, Milo�"[105].� This document does not state specifically that Richard was another son of the donor but the position of his name in the list of subscribers suggests that this may be correct.� Bishop of Langres 1030]�

HUGUES de Breteuil, son of HILDUIN Comte de Breteuil Vicomte de Chartres & his wife Emmeline --- (-Viterbo 16 Mar 1051).� "Gelduinus" donated property by charter dated to [1038/40] which names "�filiorumque meorum Evrardi, Arduini, Hugonis episcopi�", subscribed by "Gelduini vicecomitis, Harduin vicecomitis filius eius, Ebrardi fratris eius, Gualerandi fratris eius�"[106].� The Chronicon Hugonis names "Hugo Linguonensis episcopus" as brother of "Walerannus, Gelduini comitis filius", noting that he was later made archbishop of Reims by Pope Leo IX[107].� Cleric at Chartres.� Bishop of Langres 1031.� He was deposed in 1046 by the Council of Reims for simony, tyranny and homicide[108].�

ROBERT de Bourgogne, son of HENRI de Bourgogne & his wife --- (-Ch�tillon-sur-Seine, C�te d'Or 18 Sep 1111, bur Abbaye de Molesmes, near Langres).� He is named as son of Henri by Orderic Vitalis[113].� "Hugo Burgundionum dux" made a donation to Cluny dated 19 Feb 1078, subscribed by "Oddonis fratris eius, Rotberti alterius fratris eius"[114].� Clerk at Langres 1077, archdeacon 1080.� Bishop of Langres 1085, after the death of Renaud de Bar.� "Odo dux Burgundie" confirmed a donation by "frater meus domnus Hugo" to the abbey of Molesme with the consent of "fratres mei Robertus archidiaconus, Henricus puer, Beatrix et Helia sorores mee" by charter dated to [1081/84][115].� "Odo dux Burgundie" donated the village of Marcenay to the abbey of Molesme with the consent of "omnes eius fratres et sorores Robertus, Henricus, Beatrix, Helia" by charter dated to [1080/83][116].� Robert took part in the war in Spain against the Moors, with his two brothers Eudes and Henri, in 1087.� He became a Benedictine monk at Molesmes, being a friend of St Bruno who founded the Order of Chartreux[117].� The cartulary of Saint-B�nigne-de-Dijon includes a funerary elogy of the life of "Roberti Lingonensis episcopi�regum Franci� ac ducum Burgundi� stirpe genitus" dated 19 Oct 1111[118].�

  12. GARNIER (-after 1200).� Bishop of Langres .� The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines records in 1200 that "Garnerius episcopum Lingonensem dimisit", which demonstrated that �_summo pontifice_� retained the authority to ordain and consecrate, and was succeeded by �_Hilduinus_�[132].�

  13.
