IAAF WORLD WOMEN'S ROAD RACE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Held over 10 kilometres from 1983-84 and 15 kilometres from 1985-91. The event was superseded by the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. Team scores were calculated by aggregating the positions of the leading three runners except in 1984 when scores were calculated by aggregating the leading three times.

IAAF WORLD CHALLENGE ROAD RELAY

Prior to the introduction of a formal World Road Relay Championships (see above) the IAAF staged a one-off challenge event in 1986. The race was held over the standard Marathon distance. Men's teams comprised 5 athletes running legs between 5 and 12.195 kilometres each, whilst women's teams comprised 6 athletes running legs between 5 and 10 kilometres each.

Held in conjunction with the European Marathon Championships from 1994. The women's event was for individuals only until 1985. From 1981 to 1988 men's team scores were calculated by aggregating the positions of the leading four runners. In 1985 women's team scores were calculated by aggregating the times of the leading three runners and in 1988 by aggregating the positions of the leading three runners. Since 1994 team scores for both men and women have been calculated by aggregating the times of the leading four runners.
