A narrow path led through the pass along a dangerous ledge, with a deep chasm on its western side and a sheer cliff face to the east. It was through this pass that the Exiles of Gondolin fled from the fall of their city, but found themselves confronted by a force of Morgoth's creatures, including a Balrog. Glorfindel fought with the Balrog, and both fell into the depths and were destroyed. Meanwhile Thorondor and his Eagles drove off the Orcs, allowing the remaining Exiles - including the young Eärendil - to make their escape. See also...
