Cottar was born in the year 1220 by the Shire-reckoning, that is some two centuries before the War of the Ring. He had two sons, Cotman and Carl. Cotman married Rose, the daughter of Holman the greenhanded, and so began a long association between Cottar's descendants and Holman's. Notes 1 Cottar's name is not specifically explained, but we know that Tolkien used cot was a translation of the Hobbits' word hloth, meaning a cottage or Hobbit-hole with just two rooms. On that basis, we can probably interpret the name Cottar as something like 'dweller in a small Hobbit-hole', or perhaps simply as 'cottager'. See also...
