It was a remnant of the vast woodlands that had at one time covered much of northwestern Middle-earth, but by the end of the Third Age this was one of the few surviving fragments of that ancient forest. It was home to the Shepherds of the Trees, the Ents, who had at one time ranged far and wide across Middle-earth, but by the time of the War of the Ring had largely confined themselves to Fangorn's Wood. Eldest of the Ents was the immensely old being known as Treebeard, or Fangorn in Elvish, and it was from him that the forest took the name of 'Fangorn's Wood' (alongside the more common 'Fangorn Forest'). Among the Rohirrim who lived nearby to the south, it acquired a name taken from the race to which Fangorn belonged. Those Men of Rohan called it the 'Entwood', though to these people the Ents had long ago fallen into folklore and legend, until they emerged from their trees once again at the close of the Third Age.
