Our knowledge of their origins is slim, but it seems that they were devised by Fëanor himself, and that their workings were not understood even by the other Noldor who used them. Notes 1 Our last reference to a Fëanorian Lamp is in the tunnel behind the Gate of the Noldor, where the Elf Gelmir used such a lamp after his meeting with Tuor in I 491. We have no detail about the number of these lamps brought to Middle-earth, nor any description of their fates. They could evidently be used for hundreds of years, and so, in principle, at least some might have survived through the Third Age or even beyond. The Elves of Middle-earth, however, had no capability of making these lamps, so if any were lost or ceased to work, they could never be replaced. See also...
