The Encyclopedia of Arda - Haldan (original) (raw)
First lord of the People of Haleth
The son of Haldar son of Haldad, and nephew to Haleth herself, who followed his aunt to Brethil when she settled there with her People. Haleth left no heir of her own, and so as grandson of Haldad her father, and therefore her closest living heir, Haldan took up the lordship of the Men of Brethil.
We know little of Haldan's life, but based on what dates we have, he lived in a time of relative peace before the gathering storm of Angband. He died (at least according to what records we have) at the age of eighty-five, having ruled in Brethil for thirty-one years. Just four years after his death, Morgoth broke the Siege of Angband in the Dagor Bragollach, and Haldan's son and successor Halmir was thrown into the wars that followed the Battle of Sudden Flame.
Notes
1 | These dates are taken from a genealogical chart given in volume XI of The History of Middle-earth, and thus are of questionable canonicity. |
