In his youth, Írimon was fascinated by the stars, and he removed to the heights of the northern Forostar, where they were more clearly visible. There he built a watchtower among the highlands to follow the movements of the heavens. When he succeeded his father as King, he left his star-tower and returned to Armenelos, the chief city of Númenor, where he took the Sceptre in the name of Tar-Meneldur (where Meneldur means 'devoted to the heavens'). Notes 1 The Quenya word írima meant 'fair' or 'beautiful', so with the masculine ending -on, the name Írimon seems to mean something like 'fair one'. The word írima itself derived from a root meaning 'desire' or 'wish', so on an alternative reading, Írimon might be taken as 'he who is wished for'. This secondary meaning may perhaps be connected to the fact that Írimon was Tar-Elendil's third child but only son, so (under the laws of succession at that time) there was no direct male heir to the royal line until Írimon was born.
