Most references we have to the title refer to Cirion the twelfth Steward, and it is uncertain when this formal term originated, or how long it remained in use (though Gandalf at one point addressed Denethor II as 'my lord Steward'1 so the convention seems to have survived at least until the time of the War of the Ring).
