The Encyclopedia of Arda - Nandor (original ) (raw )
Dates Originated during the Great Journey , long before the First Age Race Division Pronunciation na'ndorr ('rr' indicates that the final 'r' sound should be distinctly pronounced) Meaning 'Those who turn back'1 Indexes: Alphabetical: N Elves About this entry: Updated 1 April 2006 Updates planned: 2
The followers of Lenwë Telerin Elves who turned aside from the Great Journey east of the Misty Mountains , and journeyed down the river Anduin . Some few later came into Beleriand and dwelt in Ossiriand , while those that remained founded realms of their own. The people of Lórien were of this kind, as were the Wood-elves of Mirkwood . Notes 1 This is the meaning given by Christopher Tolkien in his index to The Silmarillion , apparently based on the word-root ndan- , meaning 'back'. Given that the Nandor journeyed away down the Vales of Anduin , it might be tempting to associate their name with the more common nan , 'valley', but this does not seem to be correct. See also...
