Notes 1 III 1981 was the year Nimrodel fled from Lórien with Amroth into the south, seeking the haven of Edhellond. She wandered in the White Mountains, and eventually came to the haven in III 1982, after the ship had sailed and Amroth had been lost at sea. All we know of her fate is that she never returned to the lands she had known. Perhaps she found some other ship to pass across the Great Sea, or perhaps she died of grief for the loss of Amroth, or even wandered away through the lands of Middle-earth. 2 At least, this is the interpretation given by Christopher Tolkien in his linguistic appendix to The Silmarillion, and it does seem to follow from the structure of Nimrodel's name. On the other hand, a note by his father reproduced in Unfinished Tales states that the name Nimrodel 'cannot be fully explained from Sindarin, though fitting it in form'. See also...
