Dates Destroyed at the end of the First Age Location The lands northward of Beleriand, most notably Dor-lómin, but also incorporating (from west to east) Nevrast, Mithrim and greater Hithlum, and Dorthonion; northward beyond these lands lay the plain of Ard-galen (later Anfauglith) and then Dor Daedeloth surrounding Morgoth's stronghold of Angband Race These lands were formally under the power of the Elves, but both Dor-lómin and Dorthonion were held in later times as fiefs by Men Division Edain Cultures Men of Dor-lómin (also called the Men of the North), Men of Dorthonion Family Dor-lómin was held by the House of Hador, and Dorthonion was held by the House of Bëor Important peaks Most of the lands of the North were separated from Beleriand by mountain ranges, notably Ered Wethrin, the Mountains of Shadow, and Ered Gorgoroth, the Mountains of Terror Passes The Pass of Sirion divided the two great highland regions of the North Notes The peoples of Beleriand used 'the North' in two different ways, and this entry refers to its use for northern lands held by allies, especially Dor-lómin; sometimes, however, 'the North' could be be used of the more distant northern region held by Morgoth and his servants, and for that latter usage see the alternative entry for The North. At times, though, the name was used to describe the allied lands that lay between Beleriand and Angband. In particular, the name was used for Dor-lómin, the grey land beyond the Mountains of Shadow that was held by the Men of the House of Hador. Notes 1 The 'North' in this context most usually referred to Dor-lómin, the land shown in the western section of the map, under the control of the House of Hador. The term might in principle also be extended to Dorthonion, further to the east, which was held by the House of Bëor until the Dagor Bragollach. See also...
