Indexes: Alphabetical: S Others About this entry: Updated 11 November 2009 Updates planned: 2 The shining Silmaril of Eärendil After the vessel carrying Eärendil and Elwing disappeared across the Great Sea into the West, no news came back to Middle-earth of their fate, until suddenly a bright and shining star rose up in the western sky. Unknown to the people of Middle-earth at that time, this was a Silmaril borne by Eärendil aboard his vessel Vingilot, carried up into the airs above the world. Watchers east of the Sea took this new star as an omen of hope, and gave it the Elvish name Gil-Estel, or 'Star of High Hope'. Their hope was soon fulfilled, as the armies of the Valar passed into Middle-earth and fought the War of Wrath that brought the reign of Morgoth to an end. See also...
