Dates Race Culture Family Settlements Pronunciation to'lman ko'tton Meaning Uncertain1 Other names 'Tolman' was commonly abbreviated to 'Tom' Note This Tolman named his eldest son 'Tolman', so there were two Hobbits with the name 'Tolman Cotton'; for more on this younger Tolman, see the entry for Tolman 'Tom' Cotton, junior Indexes: Alphabetical: C Alphabetical: F Alphabetical: T Hobbits About this entry: Updated 7 October 2014 Updates planned: 1 The father of Rose Cotton A respected Hobbit of the Shire, who played an important part in rallying the Shire-hobbits during the last days of the War of the Ring. He became Sam Gamgee's father-in-law through his daughter Rose. Notes 1 As an English name, 'Tolman' means 'toll man', a collector of tolls. It seems unlikely, though, that this Hobbit's name is intended to have quite such a literal meaning, and probably has more to do with following the naming patterns of his ancestors, who had names such as 'Holman' or 'Cotman'.
