Microphones (mics) are among the simplest input devices used in an audio system. Generally speaking, microphones convert sound energy into electrical energy. In this regard, they are the exact opposite of the familiar audio speaker. Microphones are available with a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and operating characteristics. Some types of microphones even include very small_amplifiers_ inside of them to boost the tiny electrical signal created within the microphone to a more useful level.
