Tokagypt 58 Pistol - Original Egyptian Contract (Variant 1)

Original Factory Code: TT-9P
Quantity: 13,250
Chambering: 9x19mm Parabellum
Length overall: 192mm [7.56"]
Barrel: 115mm [4.53"] rifled

In 1957 Fmru Fegyver s Gpgyr received the Egyptian Army contract for 30,000 Tokarev TT-33 type pistols in 9x19mm Parabellum. This pistol was developed by Ambrus Balogh, weapons engineer at Fmru and it was originally referred to as TT-9P, but eventually it was called and marked "Tokagypt 58".

It was a significant modification of the Soviet Tokarev TT33 and the Hungarian 48.M for the 9x19mm cartridge. A new safety catch was fitted on the left top side of the receiver, a convenient one-piece wrap-around plastic grip and a finger support on the magazine.

Apparently after 13,250 pistols had been delivered, the contract was terminated by the Egyptians. This is difficult to understand, the concept was sound, and the pistols were well made. Perhaps the decision was more political than technical. Different sources claim that Egypt had payment problems and the Hungarians stopped further delivery. Either way the remaining pistols were sold commercially, which are discussed below.

One of these pistols is marked "Czech" on the frame, probably a misguided import mark.

The original slide legend on the left side, 'PARABELLUM Cal. 9mm' was kept. A Russian type hammer & sickle was stamped left of the legend. '+ 7,62mm' was stamped after the '9mm. The letters 'TT' for 'Tula Tokarev' were stamped farther right of the legend. The 'new' pistol was marketed as the 'TT-58' and came with 2nd replacement barrel chambered in 7.62x25mm.

The right side of the slide is marked with 'SUPER' and a circled '12'

The targeted market for this variant is unknown, most likely the USA. Reportedly these were imported cca 1990-92

General Notes

The '02' on the trigger was the Warsaw Pact country code for Hungary. Several parts maybe marked with this code.

German commercial proofmarks are visible on the slide of some of these pistols

While original pistols had the finger-rest bottom magazines, many examples now have the old TT-type magazine without finger support.

These holsters were supplied with pistols imported during the 2000's.

Incorrect replacement grips on a pistol sold by D&B Militaria in the UK.

Aftermarket 7.62x25mm replacement barrels and magazines were also manufactured, so check the caliber of your pistol before loading/firing.

US Import markings are on some of the pistols, CAI, Georgia VT (Century Arms) or SSME, Plant City FL.

Please provide serial number and Variant data to correct these estimates.
