Independent Heroes from the U.S.A.
While this site began as an effort to catalogue the superheroes and supervillains from around the world (and not the heroes of the U.S.A.), I soon began to realise that many of the excellent independent comic creations had virtually no representation on the net either. Having been a huge fan of some of these characters when I was growing up, I felt that this imbalance needed redressing as badly as that of the other national heroes who were being ignored. There is no way I can list every independent character ever created - the number of companies and small press comics that sprang up and vanished as swiftly, especially during the boom of the eighties, is unbelievable. But I can at least give mention to the most prominent, the most influential and durable (and my personal favourites too). Although some of these creations have not seen new stories printed in the last few years, none of them is really dead and gone. As time has shown, a good character will always find a way back from the void.
I've tried to break the groupings down into either "universes" or by company that published their adventures (although it should be noted that independent characters are often creator owned, and thus have been known to shift from one company to another - where this is the case, I usually try to list the character under either the company which it is most associated with, or in duplicate links from as many of the appropriate companies as I can). On a side note, it's been a while since I wrote that first paragraph, and my comment about listing prominent, influential and durable titles is no longer entirely accurate - in the interest of completeness I'm gradually adding in more and more titles, and some of them are less than brilliant. Please don't take a character's inclusion in the site to be either a recommendation or an endorsement.
