Primary discovered 1960 Sep 24 from Palomar Observatory, California, USA by C. J. van Houten, I. van Houten-Groeneveld, and T. Gehrels. Alternate designation(s): 4575 P-L, 1935 SA1, 1952 HV3, 1953 TD2, 1977 KD1. Linked to prediscovery observations from 1953 Oct 09. Permanent number assigned 1988 Aug 27.

Named 1993 Sep 01 for Eugenio E. Mendoza V (1928-) [MPC22499].
