Named 1991 Mar 30 for Linus Pauling (1901-1994) [MPC17981].

Companion discovered 2004 Mar 04 by W. J. Merline, P. M. Tamblyn, C. Dumas, F. Menard, L. M. Close, C. R. Chapman, G. Duvert, and N. Ageorges using adaptive optics telescope observations from Very Large Telescope, ESO, Cerro Paranal, Chile. Announced 2004 Mar 05 [M04b]. Provisional designation S/2004 (4674) 1.
