Ashok: Today I have (some) questions about Kashmiri food.

Mohan: Yes, certainly.

Ashok: What is the (typical) food of Kashmiris?

Mohan: The Kashmiris eat rice both in the morning and in the evening. All the people in Jammu eat bread (chapatis).

Ashok: Does paddy grow in Kashmir?

Mohan: Yes, of course.

Ashok: Do people in Kashmir eat meat?

Mohan: Yes, in Kashmir, both Muslims and Hindus eat meat.

Ashok: Tell me, is meat expensive?

Mohan: Yes, meat is more expensive than vegetables.

Ashok: Which vegetables of Kashmir are well-known.

Mohan: Kashmiris eat many kinds of vegetables, but the famous ones are Ha:kh, lotus stem, and eggplant.


Ashok: JustHa:kh, lotus stem, and eggplant?

Mohan: Not only these, but kohlrabi and turnips as well.

Ashok: One day I must eat kohlrabi and turnips.


Mohan: Kashmiris eat dal also.

Ashok: How do Kashmiris cook meat?


Mohan: Well, do you not eat Roganjosh(a red-colored spicy meat dish),Yakhin(meat cooked with yogurt),Goshtaba(meat balls cooked in milk - a delicacy of Kashmiri Muslims), or Matsh(minced (ground) meat)?

Ashok: Yes, I do. Well, how does one cook Roganjosh?

Mohan: One cook makes very good Roganjosh. (Why don't you) come sometime, and see (how he does it).

Ashok: Is there fish in Kashmir?


Mohan: Yes, the river Vitasta (Jehlum) has several types of fish. Come to our house someday and eat the trout of this place.

Ashok: Do you know how to cook fish?

Mohan: Do not worry. The fish will be cooked. Our servant knows how to cook good fish too.

Ashok: Very well, then I will certainly come. I (really) have to eat Kashmiri fish.

Mohan: Yes, (you) certainly (do)!
