Dear Lydia Mikhailovna,

I am sending you a postcard I have bought for you with a plan of Berne and a note of the necessary addresses.

I strongly advise you to go to Berne: you must receive treatment, and_Kocher is the only one_ who can cure you. I have made inquiries of every kind, looked up medical literature (a big book by the son, Albert Kocher, on goitre), consulted physicians in Berne, and I speak from experience.

Write to Professor Kocher in September asking him to make a definite appointment (and mentioning that you dispose only of such-and-such a sum, otherwise you’ll have to face the unpleasant prospect of haggling with the tight fisted Frau Professor). He will answer, fixing a_date_ when he can receive you. Then you can start out. Life in Berne is cheap. We’ll give you introductions to Shklovsky and Shenderovich—they will help you. In a few months you will forget that you were an invalid.
