The Ideas of the Woman Suffrage Movement 1890-1920
Aileen S. Kraditor
Columbia, 65s
This is a detailed and scholarly study of the American woman suffrage movement. Like the English suffragettes, the movement in America was middle-class. It had a link in the early years with the campaign for the abolition of slavery.
Some of the most fascinating material in this book is in the accounts of the speeches and writings of the opponents of votes for women, and the wrangles about the interpretation of the Scriptures.
