As we go to press, the news of the sudden death of Isaac Deutscher arrives too suddenly for a considered statement to be prepared. However, it is clear that socialists have lost a great chronicler, someone who both raised the most important issues and raised them through a time of very great hardship for Marxists. Whatever our disagreements with him may have been, his death is a major loss to Marxist scholarship and one that will be regretted by all serious socialists.
