Research Subjects: Government & Politics: Diplomatic Documents (original) (raw)
This section will contain many translated documents relating to the diplomatic aspects of the Napoleonic era, including treaties. Documents will be presented not only from France, but from the Allies also. Over time, additional documents will be added, and they will be presented in chronological order.
Most of these documents are extracted from the Annual Register, which served as a contemporary record of the events of the day. Published annually, each years edition of the Annual Register contained a lengthy history of the past year, a month-by-month chronology of the most significant and interesting events, a selection of significant statistics for Britain, a selection of "State Papers," as well as other items of interest to its readers.
The Annual Register, or, A View of the History, Politics, and Literature for the Year... London: Printed by R. Wilks for W. Otridge and Sons, etal. (Publisher varies by year.) Published for the years 1758-1837 in 80 vols.; illus., maps; 21-23 cm. Alternate titles for some years include: Annual Register, or, a View of the History and Politics of the Year... and New Annual Register, or General Repository of History, Politics, and Literature, for the Year... Succeeded by: Annual Register of World Events.
Originated with Robert Dodsley, at the suggestion of Edmund Burke, who was for some years editor and principal contributor. Some time after 1791, the copyright and stock were purchased by Otridge and other booksellers. Messrs. Rivington published a rival continuation, which lasted from 1791 to 1812, and again from 1820 to 1824, when the two united to form one publication. Cf. Lowndes. Bibliographer's Manual, v. 1.
