1 ἐὰν δὲ εὑρεθῇ τραυματίας ἐν τῇ γῇ ᾗ κύριος ὁ θεός σου δίδωσίν σοι κληρονομῆσαι πεπτωκὼς ἐν τῷ πεδίῳ καὶ οὐκ οἴδασιν τὸν πατάξαντα 2 ἐξελεύσεται ἡ γερουσία σου καὶ οἱ κριταί σου καὶ ἐκμετρήσουσιν ἐπὶ τὰς πόλεις τὰς κύκλῳ τοῦ τραυματίου 3 καὶ ἔσται ἡ πόλις ἡ ἐγγίζουσα τῷ τραυματίᾳ καὶ λήμψεται ἡ γερουσία τῆς πόλεως ἐκείνης δάμαλιν ἐκ βοῶν ἥτις οὐκ εἴργασται καὶ ἥτις οὐχ εἵλκυσεν ζυγόν 4 καὶ καταβιβάσουσιν ἡ γερουσία τῆς πόλεως ἐκείνης τὴν δάμαλιν εἰς φάραγγα τραχεῖαν ἥτις οὐκ εἴργασται οὐδὲ σπείρεται καὶ νευροκοπήσουσιν τὴν δάμαλιν ἐν τῇ φάραγγι 5 καὶ προσελεύσονται οἱ ἱερεῖς οἱ Λευῖται ὅτι αὐτοὺς ἐπέλεξεν κύριος ὁ θεός σου παρεστηκέναι αὐτῷ καὶ εὐλογεῖν ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπὶ τῷ στόματι αὐτῶν ἔσται πᾶσα ἀντιλογία καὶ πᾶσα ἁφή 6 καὶ πᾶσα ἡ γερουσία τῆς πόλεως ἐκείνης οἱ ἐγγίζοντες τῷ τραυματίᾳ νίψονται τὰς χεῖρας ἐπὶ τὴν κεφαλὴν τῆς δαμάλεως τῆς νενευροκοπημένης ἐν τῇ φάραγγι 7 καὶ ἀποκριθέντες ἐροῦσιν αἱ χεῖρες ἡμῶν οὐκ ἐξέχεαν τὸ αἷμα τοῦτο καὶ οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ ἡμῶν οὐχ ἑωράκασιν 8 ἵλεως γενοῦ τῷ λαῷ σου Ισραηλ οὓς ἐλυτρώσω κύριε ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου ἵνα μὴ γένηται αἷμα ἀναίτιον ἐν τῷ λαῷ σου Ισραηλ καὶ ἐξιλασθήσεται αὐτοῖς τὸ αἷμα 9 σὺ δὲ ἐξαρεῖς τὸ αἷμα τὸ ἀναίτιον ἐξ ὑμῶν αὐτῶν ἐὰν ποιήσῃς τὸ καλὸν καὶ τὸ ἀρεστὸν ἔναντι κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ σου

1 When, in this land of thine, a dead man’s body is found and there is no knowing who slew him, 2 elders and judges must betake themselves to the spot where he lies, and find by measurement which of the neighbouring cities is nearest at hand. 3 It is for the elders of the nearest city to do what must be done. They will choose out from the herd a heifer that has never borne yoke or ploughed furrow, 4 and in some wild and rugged glen, that was never ploughed or sown, this heifer must have its neck broken. 5 Priests must be there, of Levi’s race; these are the men whom the Lord thy God has chosen to minister to him, and give their blessing in his name, and also to decide between right and wrong, clean and unclean. 6 And the elders of this neighbouring city, close to the dead man,[1] will wash their hands over the heifer that lies slain in the glen, 7 protesting, Not ours the hand that shed this blood; our eyes never witnessed the deed; 8 be merciful, Lord, to Israel, the people thou hast claimed for thyself; do not charge Israel, thy own people, with guilt because it is stained with an innocent man’s blood. So shall they be quit of all blame for the murder. 9 Do my bidding, and the guilt of blood wrongfully shed shall never rest upon thee.

1 Quando inventum fuerit in terra, quam Dominus Deus tuus daturus est tibi, hominis cadaver occisi, et ignorabitur cædis reus, 2 egredientur majores natu, et judices tui, et metientur a loco cadaveris singularum per circuitum spatia civitatum: 3 et quam viciniorem ceteris esse perspexerint, seniores civitatis illius tollent vitulam de armento, quæ non traxit jugum, nec terram scidit vomere, 4 et ducent eam ad vallem asperam atque saxosam, quæ numquam arata est, nec sementem recepit: et cædent in ea cervices vitulæ: 5 accedentque sacerdotes filii Levi, quos elegerit Dominus Deus tuus ut ministrent ei, et benedicant in nomine ejus, et ad verbum eorum omne negotium, et quidquid mundum, vel immundum est, judicetur. 6 Et venient majores natu civitatis illius ad interfectum, lavabuntque manus suas super vitulam, quæ in valle percussa est, 7 et dicent: Manus nostræ non effuderunt sanguinem hunc, nec oculi viderunt: 8 propitius esto populo tuo Israël, quem redemisti, Domine, et ne reputes sanguinem innocentem in medio populi tui Israël. Et auferetur ab eis reatus sanguinis: 9 tu autem alienus eris ab innocentis cruore, qui fusus est, cum feceris quod præcepit Dominus.
