7 ἐὰν δέ τις δῷ τῷ πλησίον ἀργύριον ἢ σκεύη φυλάξαι καὶ κλαπῇ ἐκ τῆς οἰκίας τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐὰν εὑρεθῇ ὁ κλέψας ἀποτείσει διπλοῦν 8 ἐὰν δὲ μὴ εὑρεθῇ ὁ κλέψας προσελεύσεται ὁ κύριος τῆς οἰκίας ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ ὀμεῖται ἦ μὴν μὴ αὐτὸς πεπονηρεῦσθαι ἐ{F'} ὅλης τῆς παρακαταθήκης τοῦ πλησίον 9 κατὰ πᾶν ῥητὸν ἀδίκημα περί τε μόσχου καὶ ὑποζυγίου καὶ προβάτου καὶ ἱματίου καὶ πάσης ἀπωλείας τῆς ἐγκαλουμένης ὅ τι οὖν ἂν ᾖ ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ ἐλεύσεται ἡ κρίσις ἀμφοτέρων καὶ ὁ ἁλοὺς διὰ τοῦ θεοῦ ἀποτείσει διπλοῦν τῷ πλησίον 10 ἐὰν δέ τις δῷ τῷ πλησίον ὑποζύγιον ἢ μόσχον ἢ πρόβατον ἢ πᾶν κτῆνος φυλάξαι καὶ συντριβῇ ἢ τελευτήσῃ ἢ αἰχμάλωτον γένηται καὶ μηδεὶς γνῷ 11 ὅρκος ἔσται τοῦ θεοῦ ἀνὰ μέσον ἀμφοτέρων ἦ μὴν μὴ αὐτὸν πεπονηρεῦσθαι κα{Q'} ὅλης τῆς παρακαταθήκης τοῦ πλησίον καὶ οὕτως προσδέξεται ὁ κύριος αὐτοῦ καὶ οὐκ ἀποτείσει 12 ἐὰν δὲ κλαπῇ πα{R'} αὐτοῦ ἀποτείσει τῷ κυρίῳ 13 ἐὰν δὲ θηριάλωτον γένηται ἄξει αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὴν θήραν καὶ οὐκ ἀποτείσει 14 ἐὰν δὲ αἰτήσῃ τις παρὰ τοῦ πλησίον καὶ συντριβῇ ἢ ἀποθάνῃ ἢ αἰχμάλωτον γένηται ὁ δὲ κύριος μὴ ᾖ με{T'} αὐτοῦ ἀποτείσει 15 ἐὰν δὲ ὁ κύριος ᾖ με{T'} αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἀποτείσει ἐὰν δὲ μισθωτὸς ᾖ ἔσται αὐτῷ ἀντὶ τοῦ μισθοῦ αὐτοῦ
7 Where money or goods entrusted to a friend’s keeping have been stolen, the thief, if he is found, must make twofold restitution. 8 If he cannot be found, the owner of the house where they lay in keeping shall be brought before the judgement-seat.[2] He must swear that he laid no hands on his neighbour’s property with malicious intent. 9 Be there a loss of ox or ass or sheep or clothing or any other kind of property, the two parties shall come before the judgement-seat, and the defendant, if he is found guilty, shall make twofold restitution. 10 If a man entrusts his neighbour with ass or ox or sheep or any other beast for safe keeping, and it is killed or wounded or carried off by enemies, with no witness to the fact, 11 the matter shall be settled by an oath, which the owner shall accept, that the other did not lay hands on his property; there is no restitution to be made. 12 But where the loss is due to theft, the owner shall be compensated. 13 If it has been killed by a wild beast, the carcase must be brought before the owner, and no amends made. 14 Where a man has borrowed any such beast of his neighbour, and it is maimed or killed in the owner’s absence, compensation must be made to him; 15 but not if the owner himself was present, and especially if hire was being paid for the work the beast did.
7 Si quis commendaverit amico pecuniam aut vas in custodiam, et ab eo, qui susceperat, furto ablata fuerint: si invenitur fur, duplum reddet: 8 si latet fur, dominus domus applicabitur ad deos, et jurabit quod non extenderit manum in rem proximi sui, 9 ad perpetrandam fraudem, tam in bove quam in asino, et ove ac vestimento, et quidquid damnum inferre potest: ad deos utriusque causa perveniet, et si illi judicaverit, duplum restituet proximo suo. 10 Si quis commendaverit proximo suo asinum, bovem, ovem, et omne jumentum ad custodiam, et mortuum fuerit, aut debilitatum, vel captum ab hostibus, nullusque hoc viderit: 11 jusjurandum erit in medio, quod non extenderit manum ad rem proximi sui: suscipietque dominus juramentum, et ille reddere non cogetur. 12 Quod si furto ablatum fuerit, restituet damnum domino; 13 si comestum a bestia, deferat ad eum quod occisum est, et non restituet. 14 Qui a proximo suo quidquam horum mutuo postulaverit, et debilitatum aut mortuum fuerit domino non præsente, reddere compelletur. 15 Quod si impræsentiarum dominus fuerit, non restituet, maxime si conductum venerat pro mercede operis sui.
[1] In Jewish as in Roman law, housebreaking by night was counted a more serious offence than open robbery by day. The text here is perhaps inaccurate; verse 4 would fit in better after verse 1.

[3] In the Hebrew the word is feminine, ‘witch’.
[4] ‘The powers above thee’; literally, ‘the gods’, but it seems clear from the second half of the sentence that earthly rulers are here referred to. Cf. Ac. 23.5.
