16 εἰ δὲ μὴ νουθετῇ ἄκουε ταῦτα ἐνωτίζου φωνὴν ῥημάτων 17 ἰδὲ σὺ τὸν μισοῦντα ἄνομα καὶ τὸν ὀλλύντα τοὺς πονηροὺς ὄντα αἰώνιον δίκαιον 18 ἀσεβὴς ὁ λέγων βασιλεῖ παρανομεῖς ἀσεβέστατε τοῖς ἄρχουσιν 19 ὃς οὐκ ἐπῃσχύνθη πρόσωπον ἐντίμου οὐδὲ οἶδεν τιμὴν θέσθαι ἁδροῖς θαυμασθῆναι πρόσωπα αὐτῶν 20 κενὰ δὲ αὐτοῖς ἀποβήσεται τὸ κεκραγέναι καὶ δεῖσθαι ἀνδρός ἐχρήσαντο γὰρ παρανόμως ἐκκλινομένων ἀδυνάτων 21 αὐτὸς γὰρ ὁρατής ἐστιν ἔργων ἀνθρώπων λέληθεν δὲ αὐτὸν οὐδὲν ὧν πράσσουσιν 22 οὐδὲ ἔσται τόπος τοῦ κρυβῆναι τοὺς ποιοῦντας τὰ ἄνομα 23 ὅτι οὐκ ἐ{P'} ἄνδρα θήσει ἔτι ὁ γὰρ κύριος πάντας ἐφορᾷ 24 ὁ καταλαμβάνων ἀνεξιχνίαστα ἔνδοξά τε καὶ ἐξαίσια ὧν οὐκ ἔστιν ἀριθμός 25 ὁ γνωρίζων αὐτῶν τὰ ἔργα καὶ στρέψει νύκτα καὶ ταπεινωθήσονται 26 ἔσβεσεν δὲ ἀσεβεῖς ὁρατοὶ δὲ ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ 27 ὅτι ἐξέκλιναν ἐκ νόμου θεοῦ δικαιώματα δὲ αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἐπέγνωσαν 28 τοῦ ἐπαγαγεῖν ἐ{P'} αὐτὸν κραυγὴν πένητος καὶ κραυγὴν πτωχῶν εἰσακούσεται 29 καὶ αὐτὸς ἡσυχίαν παρέξει καὶ τίς καταδικάσεται καὶ κρύψει πρόσωπον καὶ τίς ὄψεται αὐτόν καὶ κατὰ ἔθνους καὶ κατὰ ἀνθρώπου ὁμοῦ 30 βασιλεύων ἄνθρωπον ὑποκριτὴν ἀπὸ δυσκολίας λαοῦ

16 Is Job wise? Then let him listen to these words of mine, heed well my warning. 17 Can there be healing,[1] where there is no love of right? Wouldst thou find fault with him whose justice runs so deep? 18 He it is that says Traitor to a crowned king, and finds princes themselves guilty of rebellion. 19 Nothing cares he for royal dignity, nor takes the oppressor’s part against the friendless; are not all alike his creatures? 20 Suddenly death falls; there is a stir among the people at midnight, and they pass by to see the tyrant carried out, and yet no hand laid on him![2] 21 Still God’s eye watches over men, whatever they do, wherever they take their path; 22 darkness is none, though it were the shadow of death itself, that can hide the wrong-doer; 23 not at a time of his own choosing man meets God in judgement. 24 A whole world of men he will destroy, and put others in their place; 25 weary of their ill deeds, he bids darkness fall, and there is an end of them. 26 In some place where many triumph at the sight, he beats down the rebels[3] 27 that hitherto of set purpose defied him, recked nothing of his commandments, 28 till at last the despairing cry of poor folk unbefriended reached his ears. 29 So long as he grants prosperity, redress there is none; it is when he frowns upon man or nation that no eye can meet him. 30 Yet for a people’s sins, he will appoint a false-hearted king to rule them.

Qui dicit regi: Apostata;

qui non accipit personas principum,
nec cognovit tyrannum cum disceptaret contra pauperem:
opus enim manuum ejus sunt universi. 20
Subito morientur, et in media nocte turbabuntur populi:
et pertransibunt, et auferent violentum absque manu. 21
Oculi enim ejus super vias hominum,
et omnes gressus eorum considerat. 22
Non sunt tenebræ, et non est umbra mortis,
ut abscondantur ibi qui operantur iniquitatem, 23
neque enim ultra in hominis potestate est,
ut veniat ad Deum in judicium. 24
Conteret multos, et innumerabiles,
et stare faciet alios pro eis. 25
Novit enim opera eorum,
et idcirco inducet noctem, et conterentur. 26
Quasi impios percussit eos
in loco videntium: 27
qui quasi de industria recesserunt ab eo,
et omnes vias ejus intelligere noluerunt: 28
ut pervenire facerent ad eum clamorem egeni,
et audiret vocem pauperum. 29
Ipso enim concedente pacem, quis est qui condemnet?
ex quo absconderit vultum, quis est qui contempletur eum,
et super gentes, et super omnes homines? 30
Qui regnare facit hominem hypocritam
propter peccata populi.

[1] Rather, according to the Hebrew text, ‘governance’; Eliu’s argument seems to be that right itself can have no other source than him who is the world’s supreme Ruler.

[2] Literally, ‘In a moment they shall die, and at midnight the people shall be stirred up, and they shall carry away the violent man without a hand’.

[3] Literally, ‘He smites them as if they were wicked in the dwelling-place of those who see’; it is probable that the text here is corrupt.

[4] vv. 31-33. It is not easy to be certain what is the sense of the Latin version here. The Hebrew text differs from it considerably; but the interpretations given of this are so forced and so various as to make it doubtful whether the true reading has been preserved.

[5] ‘Father’; the Hebrew word so rendered in the Latin can also be interpreted, ‘I would that …’.
